I'm currently in need of a new DVD drive and already have one working DVD burner. Since burners are so cheap would it make any sense at all to have 2 burners? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to having a 2 burner setup?

i dont see why, since you cant burn two dvd's at once. can you? that would be pretty amazing if you could. just stick with 1 dvd drive, and 1 burner. especially since the new dvd formats are coming out soon.

Agree. Also, 2 drives would give you the ability to copy disc to disc on the fly.

Also, you can use your old drive to do the reading when playing games etc..., so you don't wear-out your new drive.

BtW: Why do you need a new drive?

Most burners have an ATA33 interface, so I wouldn't suggest burning on both at the same time unless you reduce the burn speed so the total transfer rate is well under 33 MB/s. You might try testing with a rewritable first so you don't waste a coaster.

Meaning one burner can be used to read the disc, the other to burn. You do know that burners can read discs, don't you? In fact, some burners are the best readers out there.

One possible "gotcha" is that if you have OEM burning software, such as OEM Nero, it may only allow itself to burn to the drive it was sold with. So unless they're the same brand & model of drive... yeah. And you can't install two copies of Nero, AFAIK.

Yes, obviously, i thought you meant two drives as in one rom and one +rw
