Any advantage to using raid with virtual disks?

Is there any reason that would make sense to use raid with virtual disks, instead of just one virtual disk? The disks would be stord on an actual raid to begin with. Seems kinda silly and pointless but curious if there actually are advantages to doing this from a performance/reliability point of view.
