Any advantage to printing the delivery point barcode on envelopes?

I used Microsoft Word to print envelopes and I just noticed the feature to print the delivery point barcode. I read that it is required for bulk mail, but is there any other advantage to doing this? It doesn't get there any quicker does it?
 
I guess one reason is that it is an additional way to verify that the mail makes it to the right address. Nassau county is stupid in that my house address is the same numerical address as another house about 1 mile away. (Difference in zip code and town though). We'll occasionally get their mail and vice versa though, even when the address is filled out correctly.
