Any advantage going A64 over what I've got now?

I have two boxes, an Intel 3.0ghz (o/c to 3.3) (HT enabled), 865P chipset and 1gig PC3200 DDR and the other, an AMD duallie box with 2 x XP2400 T-breds (stock speed), MPX chipset and 1gbs PC2100 DDR. Both boxes are running WinXP Pro.

The duallie video encodes faster than the Intel but still takes a while to do a whole movie. If I went with say a A64 3200, would that be faster than what I've got now?

Thanks.

your using the wrong CPUs man you can use A (1) XP CPU in a Dual CPU MB

BUT

YOU NEED AMD Athlon MP CPUs if you want to use 2 CPUs at once...

1 - AMD XP
2 - AMD MP

MP = Multi Processer

below is take from http://www.amd.com/us-en/Proce.../0,,30_118_809,00.html

""Key features include AMD's innovative Smart MP technology which uses dual, independent point-to-point system buses to increase available bus bandwidth. Along with an exemplary cache management system, Smart MP technology allows for highspeed communications between processors, helps reduce data transfer latencies, and helps ensure that both processors work to their full potential. ""

Sorry dude

Actually, if you modify the "L-5" bridges, you enable SMP support in XP processors.

Thanks for your response anyway.

With SMP aware software (which you must have if the 2400's beat the 3.3 P4) what you really need is a pair od Opteron 246's or better. They will crush either of those systems with SMP aware software

If you want video encoding, Intel systems win. That's about the only thing they win at, but they do win pretty consistently there. It doesn't really make too much sense that your dually system is faster than the P4. Video encoders aren't usually multithreaded, meaning multi-CPU (or HyperThreaded) systems won't get much of a boost there. So I don't really know. The Athlon 64 should be faster than 2x XP, but a P4 should be faster than that.

Suprisingly, Tmpgenc Plus is smp capable, but you're right in that other software probably are not. Maybe one day I'll have enough money to play with a dual Opteron system. 🙁
