King's Bounty and Rise of the Argonauts also, along with Sacred 2 have been on my distant radar in this genre. Haven't gotten around to playing any of them but they all look pretty interesting if you're looking for action RPGs. There's also Last Remnant that just came out with a PC demo, but its more of a JRPG with turn-based combat, so its a bit light on the user-controlled action.

I'm playing TLR right now, and the demo is pretty damn confusing. They don't give you any hint at what to do or what anything means. They just dropped you in the middle of an already established game.

How's it run though? For xbox critics said the game was terrific but the technical issues/graphical glitches were so fracked up that they couldn't recommend it. If it runs smoothly on the PC I'd def be interested in picking it up and would expect the reviews to be extremely positive. I won't play a glitchfest though, and they've had months to fix that. Hopefully they did.

I can't comment on glitchiness, but my computer ran it fine for the 5 minutes I played around with it. But the best part was seeing the Square Enix text fade onto the black screen upon launch--that took me back to better, more carefree days:)

Played through Titan Quest for probably 15 hours. It's a fun game, but it doesn't compare to the hotness I installed last night: D2! TQ is fun because it's similar to D2 and looks better, but running D2 at 1440x whatever it is more fun. If I could figure out why the mod artifacts at 1920x1200 I'd be using that reso. Actually, I don't think I would: everything's right at the point where it's hard to see.

Keep the suggestions coming, I'm interested to see what I've missed. I didn't have much fun in my first 5 hours with The Witcher. I'll try Sacred 2 this weekend.

Wait, there's a resolution hack for D2? When did that happen?

Not sure. I know that it's illegal on bnet, as you see about 4x the distance around you.

I'm having the trouble finding it at work; the same trouble I had last night, until I found it. When I get home, I'll try to remember to post the .exe name, should make searching for it much easier.

You can check out the Demo first if you're worried about bugs and performance issues. I found the game ran extremely well on my rig and looked excellent, a standard I've come to expect from console to PC ports. One thing that will stand out immediately, is the lack of voice acting. Full voice acting has been pretty common in PC games as they continue to move toward interactive cinema, but its not surprising its missing as this is a Japanese console port. Yes the demo is a bit confusing as it just throws you into the middle of things but from what I saw its basically broken down into:

  • 1) Overland: map/zones distinguished by waypoints. You don't actually have free movement to travel around in this world, you zone between them through connection points. Some of these areas are VERY basic, meaning it heavily uses non-interactive backdrops with only the foreground being interactive. You'll see heavy use of perspective to give the scene and background depth.
  • 2) Dungeons: this is more the 3rd person free movement you'd expect from typical platforms. You can run around and do some basic functions, like mine at predetermined action points or open treasure chests. You also have to dodge or attack monster representations. I call them representations because:
  • 3) Combat/battlefield: this is where actual combat takes place and follows some of the old-school encounter-based combat models that were common with turn-based RPGs, like the gold box AD&D games, older FF and Tactics, etc. Looks like you have a few squads on a battlefield and initiative here matters (as determined who attacks whom in the 2) Dungeon portion).

Combat is fast-paced but confusing without instructions. Ultimately I found it boring and difficult to move/position my toons, but that's probably because I didn't know what I was doing. Its obvious positioning plays a key role in battle though, as there's constant references to flanking etc. Combat basically allowed you to choose a single action from a list, but most seemed to do the same thing: attack or heal yourself.

What's worst is there's some action cues that allow you (if you choose) to hit a certain button to initiate a special attack/response. Unless you could change the duration of the reaction time or you intimately know the buttons on a PS3/360 controller (I don't), I'd say its overly difficult and not worth the trouble, especially since you can just set it to always AUTO lol.
  • 4) Combat "Raids": This is a more advanced version of your typical combat and is reserved for Boss fights. Personally I found this looked like it had potential once you figured out what was going on. You basically have a main boss with sub bosses and need to figure out the best approach to take them down. Later in the fight I got some options for super-combos or moves, like Coup de grace or Fatalities, from certain characters which were pretty cool/spectacular.
  • 5) Loot system: Looks to have a pretty developed loot/inventory/crafting system, which is standard in a JRPG like this. Lots of cool weapons with different visual depictions, stats, status modifiers and the ability to upgrade them via vendor (blacksmith type enhancement) from dropped items.
Again, I found the graphics to be excellent and the fight sequences were full of action and eye-candy. If you like turn-based JRPGs I think you'd really enjoy this. If you want more control in-combat to the point you can't see yourself just selecting options from a menu anymore, you may not like it so much. I only spent about an hour with it, may finish the demo and then see if I'll get it.

Dragon Age is tactical, story based-RPG though, not action.

Action RPG = arcade beat-em up with level ups.

Well, Rise of the Argonauts is very much a action RPG, and only about a month old. Though I've read that it's "consolish", mainly being a console game ported to PC. I have it but saving it for later.
