i just hooked up a 4 speakers setup to my santa cruz but need some way of verifying that 3d sound works. I tried to test it with half life in a3d mode but I couldn't tell whether sound came from the back or front. Maybe my configuration is wrong or the 3d sound is not very convincing with the santa cruz which I doubt. Anyways a 3d sound test software can easily help me diagnose the problem. Anybody know of any I can download for free off the net?

Does the santa cruz support A3D?

My Vortex2 card has, in the driver (Control Panel), a thing where you can click the four speakers to play a sound through each one of them individually.

But the ultimate test is a game. I usually use CS, and just slowly turn 360, and if you can hear the sounds move all around and behind you, then you know everything is fine.

Yup, a DVD would be a good start. If you want 3D in games though, you'll have to try it out. Your speaker placement could be wrong if you can't hear any 3d positioning, although you may have to play around with your soundcard settings.

i tried the 3d sound software from sensaura and it definitely works for that demo and it also works in dvds, but the 3d sound in half life or cs does not seem to work. In cs, I threw a grenade in front of me then turned 180 only to hear an explosion coming from my front and back speakers at about same volume level. The effect is that it sounds like something exploded in front of me instead of in the back. And yes I have callibrated all my four speakers to the same volume level, so that should not be the problem.

nvm, turns out i have to disable a3d and turn on eax to get 3d sound to work in 4 speaker mode for cs or half life. This is strange because the santa cruz does support a3d 1.0. oh well at least it works.
