I had a 2000 Jetta GLS before i got my current 2002 Passat. Overall i liked the car, but it had its faults just like any other car... heres a rundown...
Positives:
+ Very nice handling
+ Fun to drive
+ Nice Interior
+ Comfy seats
+ Trunk space
+ Nice stock sound system (as long as you get the in-dash cd player or trunk mounted changer)
+ No engine problems whatsoever
Negatives:
- Small things would break here and there (seat lever, buttons, dash lights would flicker occationally)... I was in the shop getting something fixed about once every other month. It was all covered in the bumper-to-bumper though...
- 2.0 engine power stinks... Its smooth, but WAY too underpowered with 115hp. Definately go for AT LEAST the 1.8t. (it can be chipped but its a meager improvement)
- Swirls in the exterior paint
- Bass in the speakers would cause mysterious rattles around the car
- Radio reception isnt the greatest
- Tan cloth interior picks up lint like a freakin VACCUM, you have to clean the seats often (and its not always the easiest)
Overall i had a good experience with my Jetta. Keep in mind mine was made in their Mexico plant (as opposed to some of the newer ones being made in Dresden or Mosel Germany)...
ATCHUNG: Keep in mind that if the car was made before 2002, it only comes with a 2 year bumper to bumper (10 year powertrain/12 year paint). From the 2002 model line on they come with a 4 year bumper to bumper (but routine maintainance isnt included any longer)
Hope this helps some, PM me if ya have any other questions...
