Time for a real racing movie (cough...Driven...cough)! This'll sure cause controversy in the paddock but hopefully Hollywood won't screw up what is truly a legendary tale!

Senna film gets go-ahead

That's kind of interesting. He even looks somewhat like Senna to boot. Be interesting to see how they handle Senna's much publicized battle with his teammate at the time.

There already is a "real" racing movie, it's called Grand Prix, and there ain't nothing that can top it, ever. Not only is the racing footage real, and quite awesome, but James Garner did all his own driving, no stunt double. Not too shabby, considering they raced old Spa and old Monza WITH the banking. Also, the IMAX Super Speedway movie that Mario and Michael Andretti made together is well worth checking out. I think it was just released on DVD, although you gotta see it in IMAX to get the best of it.

As for a film about Ayrton, seems his family has taken a major about face turn. His sister has run the Senna Foundation with an iron glove, I'm sure the Foundation will be getting a nice chunk of the royalties in exchange. I sure hope so, as it is a very worthy cause. I know I wear my Senna shirt with pride because its proceeds go right to the foundation. They're readily available, Speedgear carries them, and they are an exact replica of the T shirt Ayrton always wore under his driver's uniform.

GL: I told you not to give up on Montoya's chances at Monza !!! :D

Car & Driver, Road and Track, and other automotive publications often refer to Steve McQueen's Le Mans (1971) as another great racing movie. McQueen did his own driving as well. Of course, Grand Prix was five years earllier in 1966.

Gotta love James Garner. Was kind of bummed he played... or that he was the voice of... the bad guy in Atlantis.

Been wondering if someone would ever make a film about Senna... still cannot believe he's dead. Arguably the most skilled driver of his time. I still can vividly see him plowing into that wall on the wet track.

Another good racing movie: Driven

J/K ;)

The only good thing about that was that it was filmed in Montreal...

I've heard so much about Grand Prix, but it's an older movie right? Apparently, BAR held a Grand Prix night this past summer for the paddock where they showed the film and everybody partied. And the F1 forums I browse through always talk about Grand Prix and how it will never be topped (kind of like GPL).

Driven was supposed to be about F1 but Bernie Ecclestone took a look at the script and declined - say what you want but the guy's not stupid!

I've been picking up the new F1 Magazines and almost every issue has had something about Senna. Pretty interesting stuff - from his first drive in an F1 car to an interview with Alain Prost regarding Senna to his grave concern for Donnelly when he crashed his Lotus Lamborghini. I hope the movie picks up on all the subtleties and sheds new light on Senna.

Midnight Rambler - good call on Montoya...not the most ideal circumstances for a win but for once luck was on his side! I'd like him to win at USGP so that there's no doubt as to the #1 driver at Williams;)

OMG, Driven was sooo bad. I saw it at a "dollar theatre".....needless to say.......it was a ripoff.

Senna is my all-time favorite driver, I hope the movie does not end up anything like Driven.

The movie "Grand Prix" is shown occasionally on Turner networks, TCM, TNT etc. May have been on Speedvision before too.

LOL, I'm just trying to think of who the other drivers and F1 figures might be played by...notably Alain Prost!

I could see Russell Crowe as Nigel Mansell, Leonardo DiCaprio as young Michael Schumacher, Harrison Ford as Sir Frank Williams, Anthony Hopkins as Ron Dennis, and....a stretch, but Jason Biggs as Alain Prost if he could nail down a French accent;)

Geez...nobody should let me near a production set. I'd be over budget before the movie started filming:)

<< With Antonio Banderas ??? What ...Richard Gere was busy? >>

Apparently, all the good actors were busy, so they just said, "Well, he looks sorta Brazilian, or Italian, or Cuban, and he talks funny, he'll work."

Grand Prix is readily available, it's so popular they keep it in print. VHS comes in two formats, and I think they are also releasing the letterbox version for DVD with extra footage and interviews, etc. A couple times they have showed this "bonus" version on SpeedVision.

I highly recommend it, there has never been a period of racing similar.
