Maybe while not as good as pay versions like NOD32 or Kaspersky, Antivir is free, works well, and its resource use is lightweight.

AntiVir and Avast! are both nice, but I prefer Avast because Antivir was causing a lot of problems (random restarting) with my computer.

Just had an experience where Kaspersky detected 23 infections on my box.

McAfee,
NOD32,
TrendMicro and
Panda

each were also run. None of them detected the infections.

ONLY Kaspersky found them, and I cleaned them out.

This experience has proven to me that at this time, Kaspersky is definitely the best of these 5.

I worked a few weeks at my local computer store and the 2 guys that work their only sell & use Kaspersky because they say it's the best. Haven't tried it myself though.

Anti-vir is rated the best free anti-virus software for malware detection.
NOD32 is rated the best light-load anti-virus software, (good for gamers) but while it has an excellent detection rate, the next one beats it in that regard.
Kaspersky is rated the best anti-virus software for malware detection rate, but it's slower than NOD32.

Oh, and I don't use any anti-virus, though I've tried the first two for a short while.
