Antivirus Software for Multi-OS Malware

Do antivirus scanning tools detect viruses for OSs other than the one the tool is executing on? For example, will ClamAV for Linux detect a Windows or Mac virus? I am thinking yes because the signature database is populated with the signatures of all OSs so the antivirus tool reads the same database regardless of platform it is running on.
 
From my observations, it would be more likely than not, but companies won't necessarily all have the same policies.
