Antivirus settings in the BIOS?

I just finished building a new rig for a friend using these parts:

ASUS P5GD1 Pro with 915P chipset
P4 540J 3.2 GHz
2x512Mb PC3200 Geil value RAM
Maxtor Diamondmax 10 200GB SATA harddrive, 8Mb buffer
Pioneer DVR 109
Leadtek PX6800, 256Mb
Antec SLK-2650 BQE
Windows XP Home

In the BIOS there are two settings that relate to virus protection. One is the 'Boot Sector Virus Protection' the other is 'NX Technology'.

('NX Technology' is the No Execute technology that is new for the P4 CPUs with the 'J' suffix in their name, like the 540J I got.)

What is the reason that both are disabled in the BIOS at default?

Any risks in enabling one or both?
