antivirus problem

why doesnt my av's auto protect feature detect adware threats? my computer has been destroyed because it failed to detect the adware which blows up into a trojan.
running norton antivirus 2004.

Maybe because you are runnning the wrong AV software.

Norton may be the biggest AV supplier, but not neccessarily the best.

In reality though, none of the AV/Trojan/Spyware detection programs are 100%,
so the best you can do is deal with it.

AP doesn't detect adware/spyware threats, just av/trojan threats (this is for performance reasons). You'll have to elaborate more as you've classified a specific thing as both adware and a trojan. If it is actually a trojan it should be blocked. Can you elaborate on your situation more?
