Antivirus affecting system performance?

I've just completed a reformat and XP installation. I've included an antivirus (Mcafee) application, but I've noticed that my system is a lot less "responsive" than it was previously. There is a noticable lag between clicking an icon and the launch of that icon or folder. IT SEEMS that when I disable the Antivirus, everything reverts to normal and things happen a lot quicker.

Is this normal?

Could be...what version of McAfee are you running? have you tried changing some of the settings to disable certain scanning aspects rather than all?

May need to try a different AV prog.

Thanks for the heads up bacillus. I did a fresh install of WinXP Pro yesterday and I noticed a slowdown after running Windows Update. Now I know why. 🙂 I'll fix it tonight.
