hey folks

Can ya'll answer a question for me?

How much better/faster is a Sapphire X800GTO(12 pipes) vs an XFX 6800 Extreme 512 (8 pipes) ?

They are both AGP.

Which 6800 is it? Do you mean the 6800 512mb ultra extreme?
I believe that one has 16 pipes. I never heard of a extreme 512mb with 8 pipes.

The X800 GTO should be faster than any 6800 series card it was 1 gen newer and competed w/ the 7XXX Nvidia cards so its quite a bit faster than any 6800 series card even the Ultra, it was also common to try and flash those to unlock the missing 4 pipe / quad.

edit: the closest Nvidia card to this one was prob. the 7800GT it was slightly worse performer than the X800 XL

dude, you're mistaken. X800 were the competition to the 6800's. X1800's were the compettion to the 7800's. X1900's were the competition to the 7900's. But you are right that some GTO's were flashable. namely the GTO2, or the connect 3d GTO. I think the 6800 the op is talking about is indeed a paltry 8 pipe version made by XFX they decided to call extreme just to sell the ah heck and not an Ultra extreme

Sound like this is one of those neutered 6800s - barely faster than a 6600GT (which was great bang-for-buck, but not in any way high-end). The X800 wins out on raw power, but doesn't have DX9.0c SM3.0 - this was a "win" selling point for the GF6 series.

X800 XT with 16 pipes was faster (in some tests, close in others) than anything 6800 range. However, anything in X800 range has serious disadvantage: lack of shader model 3 which makes it unplayable today with a few games as they explicitly require SM3.0.
