Anti-Virus Software?

I've been wanting to purchase an anti-virus package since I built my new box, but I remember friends telling me that they take over your system. I tried a demo of McAffee and hated it and was wondering what everyone uses. I'd like something that doesn't run in the background. When I think something could be fishy, I can just hit scan, and that's all. Also, I want something that automatically updates it's virus definitions. Can you guys post your thoughts?

I use Norton Antivirus 2001. I know lots have a beef with Norton/Symmantec but I'm quite happy with it. YOU decide what to enable or disable. You can configure it NOT to load at boot time and when you smell something fishy, right click on the file and select SCAN. That's it, simple low resources usgae and your in full control. The Live Update is quick and easy too. That is you can set up auto update or manual download new virus defenitions. Norton usually comes out with a new definitions on a weekly basis.

I used McAffee prior and hated it! It was buggy, used alot of memory and "took over my system" as you stated.

Norton and McAffee are on par in overall protection. I heard Panda makes one of the best out there. They are top rated for new virus strains.

FYI, Norton just released version 2002. So if your considering to go that route, don't pay for 2001 when 2002 is available. Good luck.

That sounds good. Does Symantec have a demo of Nortons? I don't want to shell the cash out and not like the product. Especially with software refunds these days. Everyone has a burner, so I know I wouldn't be able to return it.

Yep, but the site has 2001/7.0 available for a 30 day trial. Funny thing, UPS just shipped me 2002 5 minutes after my initial thread. I've only had about 1/2 hour to test it out, but I like it better than 2001. And yes, you still have fully control over manual or auto protection.

All the best.

The link works for me.

Things I like about AVG:

- it found viruses on my PC that mcaffee did not find
- they are fast with updates when new viruses come out
- it is free

When I try to install AVG on WinXP it says that it is incompatible with the version of Windows. Any virus programs explicitly compatible with WinXP? Will AVG work fine on XP?

Mosdef,

You probably tried to install NAV 2001 or older on Win XP. You must use NAV 2002/8.0 for XP compatibility.
