I'm building a new PC this weekend, A64 3000+

I am going to install xp pro, sp2 and I will buy an anti virus program.

i know of norton, but I was told that PC Cillin from trend micro was the best according to cnet.com

what would you guys recommend. I hate having to pay yearly fee, but I guess that's how the industry goes.

Actually, there are a lot of free AV's out there. There's even a sticky where you can find out about them in this forum.
 
Use Trend Micro Housecall. Search for that in Google and click on the link.. no client to download, it runs completely off the web. Works pretty good, I've been using it for over a year and a half and have had no problems.

it lacks active real-time protection. Housecall is only a removal tool. If that's all you need, then that's awesome, however if you want real-time protection to stop viruses from getting to you in the first place, you will need a standalone app.

i user mcafee virusscan enterprise 8.0i, provided free by my school.

if you are willing to buy, look in to trend-micro.

if you want free, i suggest antivir or AVG.

In addition to the IE settings recommended, click into Privacy/Advanced and block all 'Third Party Cookies'.

Regarding Trend Micro, I run Trend Micro IS2005 AV+Firewall combo. Updates are 3 to 4 times/day. No conflicts with the real-time scanners of Trojan Hunter or Spyware Doctor. With this combo, with the IE browser mods discussed above, I've been clean for months.

Commercial review sites tend not to review free software since it does not generate ads and referral revenues. As a result their recommendations might be inaccurate at time.

In the AntiVirus and protection arena there are many programs that are Free and just as good. The advantage of these programs is not just being free, they also tend to be small and coded tight so they take less system resources. Most of the security commercial software packages are resource Hogging Behemoths.

If you want to pay for something, try out Eset NOD32. It has a very slick interface, very fast performance, and one of the more thorough antiviruses.

If you want a free antivirus, I recommend Grisoft AVG. You can also try avast! and AntiVir.

One of those for a freebie,pay AV try Bitdefender Pro 8,that`s what I`m using and I`ve tried most of them including Trend,Avast,Panda,Mcafee,Kaspersky 5 etc....

Bitdefender 8 Pro has a good firewall as well,the main thing that I like about it is good detection rate(up there with the best)and not a CPU resource hog.

Bitdefender AV products.
 
If you can get Symantec AV Corp. Ed., great. If not, and you're running anything newer than a PIII-1Ghz, Norton's retail lines have always served me well. For older PC's, and if you don't have the $$$ to shell out, I like Avast, once you get used to the interface.
 
Pick any of the good AV's mentioned then just alternate it with one of the free online scan every other time. For instance, use BitDefender free as your regular AV - scan twice a week then on a weekend scan with Panda online, then Bitdefender again during the week again, then TrendMicro online.

I am happy with AntiVir...why? becuase it uses very little resource than big name companies if you really cares about memory.
