anti-virus software bought on ebay

I recently purchased 3 editions of eTrust EZ AntiVirus for a church. Before bidding, I and another person looked at the ebay listing. Neither of us noticed that the listing did state that the software would be delivererd by download. I placed the bid, then discovered the delivery method later. So, our fault for not reading the listing more carefully.

Anyway, I've never before encountered this method of software delivery by an ebay seller. It seems odd. Just wondering whether I should have any concerns about the legitimacy of the software.

Well, the software itself usually isn't a big deal. The payload is the license key which, in theory, should be physical, because otherwise they could just keep selling the same key while continuing to use the software themselves. Is there any mention of how they will deliver that to you?

The seller emailed a link to go from which to get a download of the software. The link is http://www.my-etrust.com/SubscriptCenter/MSTrialRegistration.aspx. It says
"1 year FREE trial of eTrust EZ Antivirus.
Upon completion you will receive a confirmation with a link to download your free product."

Hmmm, looks like we paid for something that we could have gotten for free. If so, then ebay listing was basically a fraud. Looks like I need to raise the issue with the seller.

thanks. I'm going to do that. I also just visited Computer Associates website, www.ca.com, found a Contact page, and sent them a message explaining this and asking whether the download page to which a link was provided by the ebay seller is valid. Hope they respond; that could be very helpful.

Amazingly, I just discovered that the same ebay seller has a new listing like the one I bid on. He's "selling" it again. His listing is here: eTrust EZ AntiVirus , NEW Version! Free Ship

dderolph, in the link that you posted the seller made it clear that 1) it's a free download 2) MONEY BACK GUARANTEE - If your not happy with this product, I will refund your money!

What seems to be the problem? The E-Trust link is 100% legit, and in fact I saw it posted in the Hot Deals forum roughly 1 year ago.

I disagree. Sellers are pawning off free items on a daily basis; there's nothing wrong with it. As an example Gmail accounts are free, and I am sure thousands were sold on eBay before the market was saturated. 😛

FWIW E-Trust has a lousy detection rate. You'd be better off using the freeware versions of AVG, AntiVir, or Avast!.

Don't why you provided the link. I didn't take time to read through the 3 pages of posts there. What was your point?

What free antivirus should i use for the less tech savvy?
aVast has a lower detection rate and uses more system resources than Antivir, but aVast also has automatic updates and it is overall easier to use, which makes it the ideal free (for home users) antivirus for the less tech savvy.
