Anti-Virus and Spyware scanner

I have a computer at work I want to scan for viruses and spyware, problem is I don't have the ability to install applications, I can run executibles however.
Is there any program I can run from a CD or pen drive?

I would prefer to scan with AVG and Ad-awae but would take anything just to prove to the IT department something needs to be done.

I can tell you that bringing in software from elsewhere and running it on company PCs wouldn't be a good way to endear yourself to the IT department. You can't use AVG or Ad-Aware in commercial settings unless you're using the pay-for versions, either, or you bring down a license violation on them.

What symptoms are making you suspect the computer is infected, and what has the IT department's response been?

It's the standard slowness you get when a computer is infected with spyware. Computer was real fast when we got, but as time went on it got slower(Logging in takes several minutes now, browser windows go unresponsive at times. Very simular to all the machines I've removed spyware from part time.

I work for a webhosting company so we view a lot of websites as part of normal support troubleshooting procedures, not to mention the free time browsing people do.

I/Ts response was "Norton is on the computer and nothing is being detected".

Well when you run 30 day old definiations YES nothing will be found. Also I run the same version of norton at home with up to date definitions and AVG usually finds something Norton did not(should be noted that after AVG finds it Norton Popups "I found a virus" but that's for another thread)

I could be wrong and there may not be any mal-ware on the computer but the only way to find out is to scan.

Right now I'd take some to will just scan tell me there is something but won't remove it.

Just backup your crucial files and LOL @ the IT department when virus wipes out the company's DBase.

What about online scanners? Most require using IE and install an ActiveX component.

TrendMicro/Europe, however, installs an ActiveX for IE or a Java component for Firefox.

ActiveX is a no go but the Java thing might work.
Try now
Still need a ad-ware thing or does that do both?

You can download the latest daily definition update from here. What exact version of Norton is this, e.g. 2003 or whatever, and have you fully configured it (if that's within your power)? After updating, what you can do is start the computer in Safe Mode and run a full scan in Safe Mode (maybe overnight, it'll be slow).

You should not be getting viruses in the first place. Ever. You shouldn't be running two antivirus products at once, either. And if you ARE getting viruses detected at home, you sure as heck should not be bringing in USB drives or CDs from your home system and putting them in your work rig. From your description, my guess is that either Norton and AVG are clashing, or you haven't fully configured Norton and just left it in "Nerf mode" (no compressed-file or archive scanning, no heuristics, etc).

Bigger picture: if you run as a non-Admin at work, which it sounds like you do (since you can't install stuff), then infection is not nearly as likely.

Most AV's (including TrendMicro) will scan for both but, of course, anti-spyware apps will scan more effectively for trojans/worms.

Also, I could be wrong, but I believe the Java component will install only for non-IE browsers.

Is your company hiring? 😀

Run HiJackThis and if anything looks suspicious flag one of the IT professionals so that he can make an executive decision.
