In this morning's Star Ledger from the Associated Press.

Weren't we told these new "laws" were put in place to fight terror? The government is using them against US citizens who have nothing to do with terrorism.

This is just a prelude of what we can all expect. The government passing laws that attack our Constitutional rights under the guise of fighting terror then using those laws against us instead.

Police use anti-terror laws against everyday criminals

"In the two years since law enforcement agencies gained fresh powers to help them track down and punish terrorists, police and prosecutors have increasingly turned the force of the new laws not on al Qaeda cells but on people charged with common crimes."

[...]

"Within six months of passing the Patriot Act, the Justice Department was conducting seminars on how to stretch the new wiretapping provisions to extend them beyond terror cases," said Dan Dodson, a spokesman for the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. "They say they want the Patriot Act to fight terrorism, then, within six months, they are teaching their people how to use it on ordinary citizens."

Do we really have to say "We told you so!" ??

Oh I feel so much safer from terrorism now, but that may be because I now have a far greater threat: being persecuted without a fair judicial system because of my political disposition

Where I would like the Government to step up and use the Anti-Terrorist laws within the Patriot Act
is in dealing with the intercity gang violence. There are many drive by shooting and other like acts
perpetuated over neighborhood 'Turf Wars', and bystanders are being killed or injured as there little
street gang warloards act out their petty fantasies of their gang mentality for being on the wrong
side of the street or on the wrong block in Compton for example. THAT IS TERRORISM.

Clean up our home streets to make society safe for all from within. You stand a better chance of
being killed in L.A., New York, St. Louis, Miami, Etc, at the hands of a Gang Punk than you do
of being snuffed by an Islamic Terrorist, or an Iraqi Attaki.

This is one issue that I actually agree with you on, BOBDN. The Patriot Act went too far.

and they want to give the illegal Mexicans Driver Licenses here now too.

So they'll be "legal" when they do their drive by shootings.
