Anti-static wrist strap

When putting together a computer, to what should I attach the anti-static wrist strap? Will the chassis of the case be sufficient to ground me?

I know it's probably not necessary, but I'd like to take the precaution.

yeah, chassis is perfect. Good Luck on your build! 😎

You don't REALLY need one. I build my rig while holding on my Case the whole time.

QFT, and with that in mind, to this day I haven't killed a single part due to ESD, other causes however *cough* overclocking *cough*, well, that's disputed 😛

Ah, much easier than wearing a wrist strap, I'm certain.

I've never worn one while working on a computer before, and never had any problems even on carpet, so I don't know how necessary it really is either.

plug in the power supply and make sure it's off. install the PS. then attaching the strap to the case chassis will actually do something.

Exactly. Alternatively, work on an uncarpeted surface to avoid static electricity build-up, and once in a while tap the PS with a finger. I've lived in NYC pre-war buildings for many years so I haven't used a wrist-strap in ages.

Edit: pre-war building ==> hardwood floors BTW

you dont exactly need one, but it's an extra preventive measure. i've never used one, just always touch an unpainted metal object before you do anything with components

You shoud wear an anti-static smock, boot straps and gloves.

Don't forget to plug your smock in and check yourself on the ESD tester.

😛

Oh wait, I'm not at work anymore...

I've used the same technique and have never used a wrist strap. No problems so far. I suppose that's no guarantee of future performance....
