Cigarettes are obviously only popular because of movies!!
What abou teating disorders, both over and under eating. Girls think they have to look like movie stars, lets make any movie with skinny people rated R.
People are fighting against cigarettes, but there is a new series on MTV "i want a famous face" where kids are getting plastic surgery to look like stars. But im sure thats teh cigarettes fault too.
The south park episode about smoking was the best.

Here Moonbeam points out that the difference between a bigoted issue and a social issue can be seen in the fact that gays are born gay and people choose to smoke and their choice is influenced by what's on the screen, or may be.

hmmm, moonbeam, im tired of seeing the word bigot come up accross my screen, so therefore, you outta at least make sure whomever youre thinking about calling a bigot really is intolerant of whatever practice is being discussed.

there arent many people out there that i know of that really are bigots towords smokers. they may not like it, but they do tolerate it.

Here Genesys misses the point by miles.

moonbeam fixed your post for you,

People don't chose to be smokers, they are born that way...they should be given equal protection and be allowed the same rights as all....:)

Genesis you said:

<i>"Bigot: One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ. ex. moonbeam"</i>

I added back in the example that was given since you left it off :)

Here bozak misses the point by miles too.

Not many intolerant to smoking, eh.... Well then I guess bozack is just trolling. :D

Genesys, maybe you and even bozack should have another try at my last post, this time with your irony meters turned on, You two might be a bit punch drunk and swinging at, well, I'm not sure what. :D

Here Moonbeam sounds an alert that a certain two people aren't thinking.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you were born smoking. That might explain some things...
Here XZero follows suit.

how many people die of obesity or complications caused by it? From what I hear it's more than smoking, we shoudl ban fat people and food from all media!

Fat people pretty much already are banned from the media, and television for that matter. :)

This is bull. Whats next? Its illegal to smoke in front of some one if they are under 17 years old because you might influence them? Can't drink in front of your kids because they might become alcoholics?

Not that doing this would accomplish a damn thing anyway. Every kid knows rated R movies are cooler than their lower rated counter parts, and it isn't really to hard to rent or get into an R rated movie if you're underage. Its really counter productive. Seems like a big waste of time, waste of resources, and waste of breathe to me.

I think it's unreasonable. I mean, people can't walk around with blinders covering their eyes their whole life. The government and schools are already attempting to educate children about the potential hazards linked to smoking.

Rating movies R that have smokers in it will only make it more appealing for kids to take it up, because it becomes the forbidden fruit. Get a life.

Think about it...cigarettes kill around 440,000 a year in the US. Say there is a cool character in a movie, like a private eye or something, and he smokes cigarettes throughout the movie. Kids might be influenced by this...I've known people who started smoking cigarettes becasue of a movie--I can name a few people from high school who said a movie influenced them to take up smoking :\

These people are only trying to help younger audiences but IMO are going to far--leave these issues up to parents. It's their responsibility.

Ban fat, ban cigs, ban beer, and make it mandatory to carry a gun. Everything would be better soon.

Don't forget banning Jews and requiring Burkas for the womenfolk!

Here Vic points out to Moonbeam that both homosexuality and smoking require action and that action requires choices ;)

But... the ability to have freedom of choice, even to destroy oneself, is why people say that America is a "free" country. The reason why America is declining is because all we seem to do anymore is argue over what freedoms of choice we should destroy next.
Then again, when the movie ratings system was implemented, people argued that is would lead to an erosion of freedom of the media, and what do you know? here we are.

Hehe, so true. I wasn't taking a stand on the issue. Just wanted to stop the cross-dressers from false implications. I do think, however that your action choice logic is largly an artifice. A choice not to have sex is a choice not to be what we were intended to be, a sexual animal. A choice not to smoke is a choice for health. They both have action, but the nature of the action is not related and doesn't mean anything.

Not that I really care about choice or smokers rights, but this country is taking a hard stand against smoking. For instance, many new cars, vans, and trucks do not come with an ashtray anymore. My 2004 Venture has a cupholder in it's place. The dealer gave my wife a small ashtray cup thing to use. When you put it in the cupholder, the cupholder tray won't close.

Smoking just isn't allowed any more.

I think it's all for good reason. I recall as a kid the people in the Doctor's office, and the Doctor lighting up! How crazy is that? I also recall people lighting up on airplanes, buses, and yes, the fools at the gas stations.

I still smoke, but I have to say I don't want those types of rights for me or anyone else. I don't smoke in my van or car when someone else is with me doesn't smoke. I don't smoke when having dinner with people who don't either. This is my self-destruction, not anyone elses...

I also think the more we can do to ban smoking and shut down the industry, the better we all will be.

Guess I wasn't done yet... I don't drink, and I take a hard line against drinking. (I'm gonna get killed for saying this), it's a medication. It's used by people who can't handle real. It causes change in mental state which can lead to death of the people who use it, and the people around them. It's just as crazy to drink as it is to smoke.

Are you Nuts? Do you actually think slapping The Lord Of The Rings Movies with R ratings would have any impact on young people smoking? Yes they were smoking pipes and looking like thay were enjoying it immensely in one of the scenes. Yet the smoking was a very specific pastime described in the original story.

An R rating would make no differrence to the general public anyway who really don't care about such ridiculous stuff. The only ones who seem to get worked up over this are the busybody buttinskis who don't seem to be happy unless they are forcing their opinions on others.
