Interesting approach. Off-topic, but how would you parents feel it the drug awareness classes started talking about why people use drugs? I mean we always talk about how bad they are for you, but never why they do them. Anyway, I could careless if they make it illegal to have cigs in movies PG-13, PG, or whatever.

I don't agree with it but it isn't THAT unreasonable...

Think about it...cigarettes kill around 440,000 a year in the US. Say there is a cool character in a movie, like a private eye or something, and he smokes cigarettes throughout the movie. Kids might be influenced by this...I've known people who started smoking cigarettes becasue of a movie--I can name a few people from high school who said a movie influenced them to take up smoking :\

These people are only trying to help younger audiences but IMO are going to far--leave these issues up to parents. It's their responsibility.

*raises hand* :p

Of course, my views on smoking are fairly well-known, so I suppose this doesn't come as a surprise.

This is really a form of irrational right winged bigotry against people who were born smokers.

Bigot: One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

hmmm, moonbeam, im tired of seeing the word bigot come up accross my screen, so therefore, you outta at least make sure whomever youre thinking about calling a bigot really is intolerant of whatever practice is being discussed.

there arent many people out there that i know of that really are bigots towords smokers. they may not like it, but they do tolerate it.

moonbeam fixed your post for you,

People don't chose to be smokers, they are born that way...they should be given equal protection and be allowed the same rights as all....:)

Genesis you said:

<i>"Bigot: One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ. ex. moonbeam"</i>

I added back in the example that was given since you left it off :)

I'd much rather we moved violence to R-Rated movies. I can't stand most smokers, but this is a bit silly.

Smoking story of the day: Wife is walking out of a restaurant. Obese shallow gene pool lady is waiting for her order, finishes her cig and flicks it out the window without looking. Bounces off my daughter's shoulder, narrowly misses sliding down her jacket. Wife picks up cig, says to lady "you dropped something", flicks it back into the car.

Luckily I wasn't there :)

Not many intolerant to smoking, eh.... Well then I guess bozack is just trolling. :D

Genesys, maybe you and even bozack should have another try at my last post, this time with your irony meters turned on, You two might be a bit punch drunk and swinging at, well, I'm not sure what. :D

Let people continue to dwell in their super ego about how great smoking is Freud smoked also :p I have no quarrel with smokers, I wish the tobacco industry continues to make a profit (at the expense of my health and others) We let cars do it, we had let factories do it, chimney sweepers, miners) All a means to an end, profit and progressive. Tobacco is a good industry which a lot of farmers make money on (like we don't have enough cows, or veggies to sustain us) Tobacco is economical and a great revenue maker for govt through taxes. (Id wish manufacturers wouldn't add nicotine of course to "hook" people)

KGB:

Using your argument, then we should also allow industries to pop up to manufacture and distribute pot, cocaine, etc. It would create jobs, and so what if it harmed people. As long as the manufacture did not involve artificially increasing the compounds designed to "hook" people... Would you agree with that?

Such industry doesn't exist now? Geez, I thought this was where all the socially excluded entrepreneurial talent was going.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you were born smoking. That might explain some things...

I don't really see the harm in this proposal ? Nobody would be forbidden from seeing or making films with smoking.

Maybe a better solution, which is probably part of this propsal but not mentioned in the article, would be a warning that a film contains smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc. along the lines of the
V, N, and L ratings that give an idea of why a film is rated in a certain way.

Along a simialr vein, I had no problem with Janet Jackson's "nudity" in the Superbowl, I wouldn't mind a bit more nudity on TV..

but I don't think it was right to have nudity in public, without any warning, since I think people who don't want to see it or expose their kids to it, have a right to know when it it's going to happen.

Hey bozack, I don't mind at all if you want to fix my posts, but please remove the originally posted by Moonbeam when you do. Leave 'originally posted' for originally posted for the sake of the record. And I will gladly edit if you do. I just hope El Chamois doesn't grab your confession first and stick it in his sig. :D
