Does anyone know where I can get a hosts file that would block most porn sites? Kaaza-lite came with a nice little hosts file that blocks most advertising sites, so I'm hoping somebody has something similar for porn.

Why the hell would you want to do that.. If god did not want us to look at porn he would not have given us cable-modems and internet protocols.

Notice I said "most" porn sites. I realize there's millions, but if I could even block a small fraction that would be good. IT CAN BE DONE, if you know anything about a hosts file. It may not be all inclusive, but it could block enough to be annoying and discourage my teenager.

I would think that even "most" is a ridiculous amount. Porn is *huge*.

And I am the last person to give anyone parental advice, but I will tell you that nothing my dad did kept me away from porn (of the non-online variety.. and that stuff still exists ;)). Even if you blocked 90% of porn sites, 10% is "enough" I would think. This is why some people hate filters and whatnot so vehemently: they are never effective enough (and they end up blocking innocent stuff too). But really, a filter would probably work better than any list of hosts anyone could come up with. Perhaps try that?

Just let your kid look at porn. He's going to find away around anything you put there anyway.

Some router/firewalls can block sites by keyword. But I think you'd probably sufficiently doom yourself to hell just typing in all those possible keywords.

Can I ask how old your son is? If he is older than 15 then there is a good chance that he might encounter the real thing soon. Maybe you could just talk to him....... or install a desktop monitoring program to watch everthing he does online., that way you could catch him looking at boobs..

Bah, kids have it too easy nowadays.. back in my day we had to work for our pr0n by raiding our father's dressers for any playboys or his stash of tapes.. now they can just look it up on the internet! Well, there were BBS's too.. I just got pissed a lot downloading 200k+ files on my 2400 baud modem and finding the picture was crappy! :( heheh.

If I was in high school now I would be come a porn dealer: Not every kid has a computer is good with them or maybe their dad blocks porn sites. So what you do is you take requests from people at school , download from favorite p2p network, fill up a 700 mb cd-r, sell it for 10 bucks and be on your way. I also have a plan that revolves around the X-box but I am keeping that one to myself.

the idea of a host file, is it works by making your computer resolve the sites to local host which will time them out. Thus effectively blocking them, so yes it works for any browser. Any program...for that fact

The problem with these huge ad-blocking hostfiles is that they sometimes block legitimate sites too. It is a pain to open them in notepad and to search for the entry to delete, since the file is so big and it takes friggin' long to do anything to it.

Good point, I use the "big" one linked above as done in 2002 by the original author. When Windows Update had trouble (lat year?) they went to using the akamai servers (which also host a lot of ads) and until I figured it out I couldn't use WU.
Anyway, outside of that one instance, the host file has "paid for itself" in blocking most of the crap!
