anti-lock brakes

My vehicle has rear-only ABS (95 Rodeo designed that way)... and it's malfunctioning half the time with the light going on in the dash. Is it better to have the rear-only ABS than not having ABS at all ? In which conditions ? I know there are people who turn ABS off purposely.

I can't think of any good reason for rear-only ABS if the proportioning valve is functioning properly. The primary purpose of ABS is to allow steering under emergency braking. If your fronts lock up, it doesn't really matter what your rears do. It may keep from swapping the front and the tail under those conditions, but I'd personally just deactivate it.

My Conquest has rear-only ABS by design. It's been disabled since I got the car last week. As myusername said, I think it's there to prevent the back end from locking up and coming around under hard braking, or in bad weather.
