Thirteen members of an anti-gay church from Kansas who picketed a high school graduation Saturday were met with about 250 counter-demonstrators, 30 police officers and numerous residents annoyed to see divisive protest in this normally quiet town.

Carrying signs reading, "America is Doomed" and "God Hates Perverts," followers and relatives of the Rev. Fred Phelps traveled about 1,800 miles from Topeka to picket the high school graduation at Tracy High because they were upset that students at a different high school in Tracy gained administrative support for resurrecting their chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance.

"We're here to preach to this generation that it's not all right to be gay,'' said Betty Phelps of Topeka, who carried one sign thanking God for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and another denouncing gays. "They need to learn some morals before Judgment Day."

snip...
But some people who drove by or walked past were very offended when one of the anti-gay protesters was seen dragging an American flag along the sidewalk and the dirt along Eleventh Street outside the high school.

"Take that flag off the ground. You people are just trying to insult us,'' shouted Andy Perez, 35, of Tracy, who entered his niece's graduation late in order to heckle the Topeka group. "You losers wouldn't know God if he stared you in the face. Get on back to Kansas with Dorothy and Toto."

Nine of the 13 protesters were members of the Phelps family and their church operates an anti-gay Web site.

It's just this one family.

whose parishioners travel around the nation to picket events and denounce gays, Catholics and Muslims.

They obviousln'y aren't very friendly people.

"These children are clueless,'' said Shirley Phelps-Roper.

Less clueless than her, thankfully

She said the parents and teacher of graduating seniors "are guilty of child abuse" for not teaching children the "true word of God" and the "truth about homosexuality."

You know, I'm not even going to touch this one.

"If homosexuality is OK, then so is incest and bestiality," Phelps-Roper said.

Both sides stayed a safe distance from one another and were peaceful, Tracy police said. The protest and counter-demonstration did not seem to have any noticeable effect on the graduation ceremony.

At least nobody got hurt.

Their presence was countered by a much larger group that loudly proclaimed, "Keep Your Hate in Kansas." Others carried signs saying: "Hate is not a family value."

"I'm proud of my city today -- we showed we won't put up with this hatred,'' said counter-protest organizer Justin Daley, a 17-year-old junior at Merrill F. West High School in Tracy.

At least the rest of the town is reasonable.

Yes, I don't hear much of westboro b.s. getting good receptions...It's all about getting airtime for their hate filled message.

Anyone have a clue why the media is all over any group that points the finger at america for our mistakes but lets a christian group off with protesting with "Thank god for 9/11?"

Sure don't hear o'lielly having a heart attack over that, but yet ward churchill is anti-american.....

If people marched with that rhetoric in a liberal protest they would be hauled in by the FBI...

The Phelps clan have been doing this forever. Nobody takes them seriously - in fact some gay event organizers gauge how well their events are promoted by whether Phelps and Co. show up. Some say they're actually trying to promote tolerance by demonstrating how absurd and irrational the anti-gay lobby is.

Would like to see them carry their "Thank God for 9-11" signs in NYC. That could result in some "Kodak moments" lol.

What's the connection with Ward Churchill?

The connection with Ward Churchill is that when he said that those who died in the 9/11 attacks deserved it, the right wingers went nuts. When these people say the same thing, go to the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and thank God that they willed killed, etc , etc, no one says bupkiss.

No, these idiots really exist. I remember when that gay student, Matthew Shepard, was killed tied to a fence in Wyoming a couple of years ago these people went up there to protest. They didn't protest that a murder took place. They protested that the victim was gay and how terrible that was.

Can you explain in greater detail how they are saying the same thing?

Do any of the protestors teach at a university and espouse their views there?

They are both saying that those that died on 9/11 deserved it. Churchill because all these people cared about was making money (he called them little Eichmanns, which also brought out calls of anti-semitism), these idiots because we allow gays to live in the world.

And whether or not these people teach, it doesn't make their message any less moronic. They have the right so say what they want, just like Churchill, but they also can be ridiculed for it. Oh, and since this Fred Phelps is supposed to be a minister, he's a teacher, too.

Oh, don't get me wrong, Rip. I fully believe that they have every right to say whatever stupid, moronic things they want, both Chuchill and Phelps. And the rest of us have every right, if we so choose, to show them both for being stupid morons for saying it

The question was why people like O'Rielly got their shorts all in a bunch over Churchill but say nothing about Phelps. Last I checked Churchill hadn't attended any funerals for soldiers killed by IEDs in Iraq with signs thanking God for the IEDs. Phelps has done so at several and is real proud of it. He details each one on his web page.

I'm not "in the know," but my guess would be that most people realize that these people are semi-retarded nutjobs that deserve no consideration and any media coverage would provide them with exposure that no one wants to see. Churchill on the other hand, is a college professor who is respected in many circles.

I don't think it's 'Christian' conspiracy to not give these nuts coverage. The world is full of stupid and hate-filled people - we don't have to give them all a nod of recognition.

Don't get me started on churchill in here, I just read 2 of his books and he had a big speech earlier this week.

The little eichman thing I completly understand now, and how it was easily misquoted, he is a damn smart guy who pissed off the wrong people.

His words have been pretty twisted to come up with the conclusion he was saying
americans deserved it. -in a nutshell he was saying we all know what is happening and the dangerous meddling america has been doing not surprising 9/11 did happen...and that it took so long before someone got around to striking america back.

Read a bit more into is writing, he is very respected and has not lost his job for a reason...he is smart as hell.

No confusing or need to twist these guys rhetoric...it's the real deal.

As I recall, Churchill has a Master degree from a no-name university.

He apparently falsified his ethnic background on his job application and he was charged with academic fraud and plagarism.

That's quite a record.

sure, and what else did the right wing sludge machine supposedly find out....listening to his spoken word there is a darn good reason he is so hated...

His words ring true and truth and the people who have the courage to speak it are dangerous to people like you.

I am sure we all have skeletons in the closet....but churchill has done no wrong but speak about that which you'd rather ignore, hence the frustration from people like you that you can't just get him fired for speaking out and the character assasinations.
