This is news? My kid was banned from wearing an Oakland Raiders t-shirt in high school.

There never has been freedom of expression in schools that have "dress codes".

Schools have rules against offensive clothing. You cant go to school wearing a shirt with curse words on it can you?

That's not what i mean. I when I first read the article, I felt like it was in the same vein as those protest signs comparing Bush to Hitler. You know, stupid, pointless comparisons that really don't make sense. Yes, I can see you are right and that was probably a fine assignment, but don't think i'm stupid.

Secondly, I'm surprised they forced him home. That shirt expresses a political opinion and, I would argue, falls under the same category as the armbands worn by students protesting the war in Vietnam. *sigh*

I would have thought they asked him to take it off to prevent him from getting his ass kicked by some Neanderthal but then I read that Arab Americans make up 55% of the students in that district (who very well could be Anti Hussien Assyrians). Seems to me that the school decided that it was best to face the Free Spech advocates rather than have to deal with the turmoil that could erupt if that kid was allowed to wear the shirt.

I honestly don't have the impression that most of the youth of today really give a $#@% about politics....

i'll bet whoever wore that shirt stood a real chance of inciting a fight over it, and inciting violence is not protected as free speech in this country.

besides, people under 18 aren't citizens.

Maybe not enough to pull them away from the TV, Xbox or Computer but if it offers them an opportunity to raise hell they wouldn't pass it up.

In school, there is a different code of coduct you are to follow. Many clothing items and fashion types are banned at schools. Mainly stuff that could cause trouble, such as that T-Shirt.

It's not a matter of free speech. Schools have the right to ban clothing or other activity that they feel would be disruptive to other students. This includes showing up naked, with blue hair, or with a chain connecting all of your piercings. And wearing a shirt that calls our President a terrorist could be construed as disruptive in any school in the US.

No to mention 99% of schools have a dress code and the student has to follow it or go home.

Actually that is what was "supposedly" banned, but it is not reality. When you start living in reality let me know, but I have seen NUMEROUS occasions where non-school sponsored prayer at a school was censored.
