now i know im probley goning to get shot for this but here goes anyway. When i play my games i perfer AA off, and its not that my comp cant handle it or anything cuzz it does and with flying colors too. But its just too me when i turn it on games kinda look well, a little bit not as clear. To explain; when i play my games with AA off things look clear and more 3d looking. With it on, things look kinda flat and stretched or scrunched. Or sometimes it has a more real world look and loses that video game prettiness (hmm is that even a word lol) well im just curious if anybody else feels this way is all, maybe some one can give me some insight.

It blurs the visuals.

It's normal to have a "less clear" feeling.

But during gameplay, it's barely noticeable. Unless you actually look for it.

Personally, I use it sometimes, but not always. I believe anti-aliasing is way over-rated.

I would get my beloved HQ 16 x A-F over 16 x Super AA anytime.

AA is a process that actually blurs the edges of polygons and on the 7800s and x1800s, alpha blended textures(like chain link fences in half life 2).
It works by taking samples of the color of the colors on the edge of the polygon and the surronudings and applies a transistion effect of a gradient like oclor change so the lines look smoother.
this is what aa does clos up
http://graphicssoft.about.com/library/glossary/antialias.gif

so say you have a line that should take up a fraction, say half of a pixel, but due to the fact that pixels cant be split in geometric shapes, it is ignored. without aa, you see a step like effect.

like so.

with aa, the 1/2 of a pixel that should be shaded is taken into account. Say the polygon is white and the background is black. the computer takes the 50% and shades all the surrounding pixels at a gradient starting at 50% black and 50% white and depending of the aa level you set, yuo will have that many number of rows or colums of surrounding pixels decrease in gradient gradually.

What this amounts to is that anti-aliasing adds shading along the curve to "fool the eye" into thinking it's seeing a smooth curve rather than a jagged bitmap.

I NEED Anisotropy filtering in all my games..no matter what! AA on the other hand I really dont care. I just play at the highest playable resolution and thats it. I dont notice jaggies much but I know a few that spot a jag from a mile away. Its all subjective really. Some people need AA and others like me dont care. I'll use it if the performance hit isn't too much.

QFT, but for most games i like to use 2xQ with 8af, but i can't play BF2 without AA

Agreed some games look fine with out AA. AF IS a MUST though. I have played some games though like others said that really do look much better with AA on like again as the others said BF2.

Actually I think any game with power lines in it looks much better with AA hehe..

I see no option...

Manually in the driver (NV control panel), make sure it is not marked as "Application Controlled"

Ok, what does it do?

forces every 3d app to use that setting.

yup

Just got to the NV control panel: Then select the "Performance and Quality Settings" tab -> then highlight "Anisotropic Filtering" -> then untick the tick box labelled "Application Controlled" that corresponds to that specific feature at the bottom of the window - > Then the previously greyed out scroll bar at the bottom can be set to 2x 4x 8x etc, select which AF multiplication you desire, then hit apply then ok and your set.

Be aware that this will always be in action on all your games no matter what, as it is the final video output setting, and some games my respond differently to the setting that you have selected.

I?m not to sure to be honest i just set it as high is it will go before it starts dropping some major frames as a performance hit.

There's a real performance hit with AF on Nvidia cards? I just set AF to 8X on my 9800np for all games and dont notice any kind of framerate loss.

Great! BUT HOW does it improve image quality???

It makes everything look sharper. It renders in multiple passes I think?

Also I have a question...Trilianair (horrible spelling) Optimizations, should I have those off or on for better image quality?

You'll have to test it by playing a game and see for yourself.

What res you running, 16x is quite high.

Turning on any AA or AF will be a performance hit. The amount of performance hit goes different from game to game.

You have a 7800GT. Strech it's legs and use 16xAF and some AA (if you want) as long as your not running it at uber high resolutions.

Also, look a pervious post and answer my questions :p

Instead of setting AA or AF globally, you can just enable it for specific games with the NV control panel (you may need to create a new game profile pointing to the game exe). Otherwise you may have conflicts with other games.

I take a serious hit(20-30fps) in BF2 with 16xaf 4xaa. I think i'll tone down the af... And yes I already had the 4xaa

That's the dumb way of going about things. There are these things called "profiles" that you should modify instead, that way only BF2 will use that particular setting.
