Anthrax suspected at Georgia base

Not again! 🙁

<< ATLANTA, Feb. 22 ? Six people were undergoing decontamination at the Army?s Fort McPherson near Atlanta and firefighters were testing an unidentified substance they thought might be anthrax, NBC News and local media reported Friday evening.

ARMY OFFICIALS told NBC News that they could not confirm that anyone had been exposed to anthrax but were checking for more information.

NBC affiliate WXIA-TV reported that firefighters had set up decontamination tents to disinfect six people who were exposed to an unidentified substance. A spokeswoman at the base, in East Point near Hartsfield Atlanta International airport, told WSB radio in Atlanta: ?I?ve gotten word there?s a confirmed package of anthrax.?

WGCL-TV reported that eight Atlanta fire trucks as well as ambulances and hazardous material crews were on the scene. Military guards were blocking entry to the base.

No other details were immediately available.

Fort McPherson is headquarters for Forces Command, is the Army?s largest major command, coordinating three-quarters of a million Army, Reserve and National Guard soldiers.

What's really pathetic about this story is that the Army had to call in the Atlanta fire department. Where is their Chemical, Bioilogical & Radiological decon people. I know they have them. Or at least they used to.

Ft. Mac is a pretty small base and is focused on FORSCOM. The Army's chem warfare units are not located everywhere and certainly not located in Atlanta. It is not surprising at all that there are no decontamination units there.
