Antec TruePower owners - does your PSU do this?

A few months ago I bought a TruePower 330 PSU to replace an older 300W supply that had died on me. The TruePower has worked great, but one of the fans in it has recently developed an intermitent, high-pitched whine. Doesn't seem to be affecting anything, it's just annoying. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem, and if there's any way to stop it - short of tearing the PSU apart and replacing the fans, that is :D. I'd just as soon replace it and keep it around as a spare first; probably with a Sparkle/Fortron PSU.

I have two Antec 1080awg cases with 430 true power for about 4-5 months, no problems or noises.

No noise on my TruePower. I got it right after they came out - maybe a year ago?

I would not open the chassis and try to correct the problem yourself. The TruPower, even the 330w version, is a relatively expensive PSU. I'd contact Antec and request an RMA. They're pretty good about this sort of thing.

Not sure if this person still works there, but try contacting Dennis Cuenca at Antec's Returns Dept. He is very easy to work with and should be able to issue you an RMA for a replacement.

And I think it moves about as much air as a mouse too. Both fans are spinning, but when I put my hand at the outside exhaust fan on the PSU, there's hardly any air moving. I'm hoping that the fans are thermally controlled, and the power supply is just not getting hot. But I haven't heard any whine, or any unusual noise. If you have the power supply open to get at the fans to oil them, be extremely careful not to touch anything in it - some of those parts carry, and store, a LOT of juice.

My 430 hasn't done anything wrong yet. I'm wondering if you're just noticing a change in the sound when the fans speed up, as temps rise. It's also possible that you have something connected to the temp-throttled p/s lead.

You know, that may very well be it. I never gave that a thought. As I said in my original post, the noise isn't constant. And when it does start up, it has a metallic ring to it - maybe one of the screws holding the fans down is loose; it only starts to cause trouble at higher speeds. I'll have to do a little testing to verify this.

EDIT: Started running Prime95 right after I typed this; CPU temp jumped 4 degrees C and the thing started ringing. It comes and goes. So I guess the speed change is what I'm hearing.

I've had a 430 for months and haven't noticed any change, but I might be hard pressed to notice with the noise from the other fans (incl. 7k rpm cpu fan) in the case.

LOL :D. All I've got in this case is a Panaflo L1A on the CPU and an undervolted 120mm on the back of the case - in addition to the two fans on the PSU, of course. So mine is pretty quiet.

Is the correct orientation of the Antec Tuepower supplies with dual fans with the second fan facing the top of the case or does it face down towards the Cpu?

i had a 400watt Antec SMARTpower that developed just such a whine as u described. I RMA'd it. recently an identical power supply also developed this whine, but then it went away :p

I would be the very few to say "yes!". I do own the very same Antec True Power 330 W PSU. And every now and then (I've owned it for about 3 months), it will whine very loudly. Eventually, it will die back down (the noise, that is). Is this something I should worry about everyone?

They are. I have the TruePower 430 ( and no probs here either ) and it also has to "fan only" plugs that are also thermally controlled.

I have one of these cases as well, and have had it for over 4 months. No problems with mine, quiet as dust.

The fan points at the CPU. It should only mount in the case one way.

BTW My TrueBlue 480 is quiet as a mouse. :)

No noise on my 330 Truepower...but it did burn up on me the other day! I was shocked...it was only 3 months old. Fortunately nothing else in the system seems to have been affected. The reason I am telling you this is I did an RMA. No problem...Dennis IS excellent to work with and told me that as soon as he receives my old PSU he will send another. EZ as pie. Antec rox.
