Hi,

I'm building a system w/in the next couple of months (sniping deals) with "upgradability" in mind.

I plan on starting out with:
athlon 2 x4 630 (slight overclock to @3.3)
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
4g ddr3
1TB @7000 rpm HD
3? case fans
a dvd+rw
5850 ati
<=5 usb devices
(in Coolermaster 690)

with the idea that within 4 years i'll add (order depending on prices)
crossfired 5850s
flash ssd
8g+ ddr3
whatever cpu is the ultimate end for the mobo's am3 upgrade path

I realize 750 watts is overkill atm, but the ATPN750 is 80 plus bronze w/5 year warranty (so 20% - 50% shouldn't have an efficiency penalty, no?) and I expect to have this rig for approx 6+ years
[current rig is @8 years old and keeps me happy with HL1/2+M2TW+CoH+Civ4 etc (but it's time to move on :) )]

I've used various calculators that all indicate @720 watts or so is necessary after cap degrades. I realize that if I jump down in watts, I can save some $, but I don't think I could get better value than a bronze 750w with darn good reviews for $96, no?

The other option would be to get a @ 400 watt bronze for @$50 and then pay another $100 after a couple of years, but I'd hate to "lose" money on upgrading a pws.

Feedback is appreciated!
Cheers

Better get the 550W Version, that's more than enough for your rig, even with a GTX480.

750W is too much for that.

thanx for the tip - the 550 TPN is @ $75. The 650, oddly, is @$99, which makes it irrelevant as the 750 is @$95.

Additional comments welcome!

Since Anand's test of 5850's in Crossfire, albeit on an i7 920 system that was mildly OC'd to 3.33GHz, drew 550W at full tilt, I'd honestly think about going ahead and buying the TP-750. It's not like the 750 will cost you much more to purchase and certainly won't cost any more to run.

TPN-750 for $96 is the best PSU deal there is, end of story. TBH, there's not much sense in people paying $75 for a good 550-650w when theres an even better 750w for $20-25 more
