Antec truepower 380W sufficent?

I?m in a bit of a bind. Recently, I purchased a new system: Core 2 E8400, GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L, ZALMAN 9500A, XFX 8600GT, 4 GB Crucial RAM, 500 GB WD HD, 2 Optical Drives, and 2 120mm case fans, to be powered by a PC Power & Cooling 610W Continuous PSU.

My problem is that the PC Power & Cooling unit does not fit in my case, an Antec Sonata (first model), due to a piece of metal that protrudes inside of the case, where the PSU is to be mounted. However, the case came with an Antec 380W truepower PSU, which, of course, fits perfectly. My question is: will the Antec 380W PSU power the system adequately. After all, it produces only 380W max power. But, since it fits, no case moding (cutting of the protruding metal) would be necessary, and I could potentially save about $100 if I ship the PC Power & Cooling supply back to newegg. Btw, the protruding metal seems to be there for the sole purpose of securing the Antec PSU perfectly within the case.

Or, I could cut off the metal piece that prevents me from mounting the PC Power & Cooling PSU, in order to accommodate the more powerful PSU. But is that necessary?

I think you may not understand the Sonata case. That metal does not prevent your other psu. You need to remove the motherboard from the case and then put in the new psu. The sonata does not allow putting in the psu without removing things.

Um, tomoyo, the idea that I don?t realize that the mobo must come out is a bit insulting, but I also realize that this is a tech form, where some are incredibly misinformed. Anyway, the metal piece I speak of is not the cases? crossbar (for lack of a better term), but a piece that inhibits a power supply wider than the stock TruePower 380W from being mounted. The case is specifically designed for the TruePower 380W, and nothing more.

Also, when considering whether or not the TruePower is sufficient, please understand that I fully intend on overclocking the system.

Well unfortunately the Truepower 380w is actually standard psu dimensions. That means the Pcpower must be larger than average. Lemme just mention I would not recommend keeping that psu for long term. It's not known for reliability. Switch with another one of the same dimensions.

I checked the dimensions of both PSU's they are the same width, the only thing different is the PCP&P PSU is longer. So...

PC&P 610 Dimensions
Antec 380 Dimensions

Ya I just noticed the same thing. Standard psu dimensions are 140X150X86. That's the True380. The Pcpower is 180X150X86. It's only longer and that's it.

Guys, I stacked them on top of one another, they are most certainly not the same width, or depth. The TruePower that was designed for the Sonata is not the same supply that is sold at retail stores. It?s designed specifically for that case, and Antec added a metal piece, which is approximately two by three inches, so that this supply can mount perfectly in the case.

I really do not like antec's website at all. I finally managed to find the spec sheet for your psu.
http://www.antec.com/specs/true380_spe.html

It is indeed smaller. I don't even know what form factor it would be :<

Now back to what you asked.
This PSU is not a TruePower 2, I would think it is part the original Truepower series which was using Fuhjyyu capacitors and are known to blow under just about any condition. I would not reccomend using this psu but considering its size I don't know what you could replace it with.

Thank you quicksilver, again, and tomoyo. I think I can cut or bend the metal piece in question to allow for the mounting of a larger PSU. It seems the Antec TruePower 380W will not suffice for my system.
