ANTEC TRUE POWER 550PEC

hi folks,

I need a strong and stable PSU for some 100-120 EUR: I have a an AMD 3000+@2600mhz, 5 HDDs, 2x geforces 6600 oced, 1GIG RAM oced, 3 pci cards, 2 CD/DVD burners and some 5 fans - my enermax 530w just cannot keep up any more

after serching the forum, I fancy the ANTEC TRUE POWER 550PEC.

howver I still have some questions:

-according to the ANTEC TRUE550PEC the PSU only has a 20pin mainboard connector. My ASUS A8N SLI deluxe however has a 24 pin connector. does that matter? would you just take 20 to 24 reduction cable? some experts say not to do so

- or should I rather go for the Antec True Power 550 W EPS12VAntec True Power 550W EPS12V - I know it is a server one, but it has a native 24 pin connection.


I would appreciate your comments

You don't need 550 watts (nobody dose), 350 will be more then enough for your system. Check out Seasonic and Forton Source PSU's with a native 24 pin ATX connector.

Your enermax 530w can't keep up with that?
The Antec True 550w is capable of 700+ watts, I don't think you need anything that crazy, like Operandi said a quality 350w psu should be fine.

Attached is an article about power requirements w/ a chart that indicates how much power on avg. each part requires. I currently use a Antec TrueBlue 480 on my system and don't feel comfortable adding and adding splitters to connect all of my stuff. I just got my new graphics card that requires external power and thinking of going to a 520w OCZ Powerstream.

You have even more peripherals than me. I would definitely get a better psu. With all of the money invested, you don't want to skimp and worry about parts dying or malfunctioning due to lack of power. The guy saying a 350w will do has to be joking.

The minimum suggested 12v requirement for amd64's is 24A. This usually equates to a 420-480w psu occasionally a good quality PSU like the Enrtmax 350 will work.

However when running with a boatload of peripherals it is wise to take these into account & if necessary go for something bigger. steady602 is being wise in checking out his power requirements.

Basic Building Tips :-

As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.

I have 12 Hdds
Two Opticals
Two 6800gt's
8 fans

And I am looking into a 600+ watt

Im sorry the statement nobody needs 550 is just plain false.
I notice slight dips on my 12v rail

That PSU on the first page of that selection guide is the one I have.

The Seasonic Super Tornado 400 (and the newer S12s for those who need SLI) are awesome.

I notice that my whole system behaves odd when on full load. Sometimes I even get freezes which go after a while. I also noticed that when some peipherials removed the whole system stabilises. I am pretty sure that the whole has to to with PSU.

Did you read what's in his system? FIVE HARD DRIVES plus a lot of other stuff, and you recomend a 350w?

I know quality in a PSU is more important then wattage, but still, he's running a LOT of stuff in his system... even a quality 350w is going to be overtaxed!

Sure does. Looks like you've diagnosed your problem well. I would go with a psu that has a native 24-pin power connection. If you're set on Antec go with the 550w True Power EPS or NeoPower 480w. Other good ones are the Fortron 500W Blue Storm or OCZ 530w Powerstream.

I don't care where you read it, 24 amps on the 12v rail as a minimum is complete BS. 18 amps is enough for 90% of the high-end single CPU/GPU systems out there.

125w for 5 hard drives (10A on 12V rail).

That PSU is more than enough. You shouldn't need anything more than a quality 400Watt PSU. Get the Seasonic Super Tornado 400Watt... very silent yet powerful.

I have a hard time believing that the 430Watt Enermax isn't enough for that system.
