I'm considering upgrading an old power supply in one of my old PC's to get it ready for a P4 setup. I've been looking at the power supply in the topic and also the comperable Enermax version, but leaning towards the Antec since it's cheaper and reviews have been just as favorable. Can I get some opinions please?

I've heard the Allied 450w at newegg is a good PSU. I'm using one in my dually right now, and it's going strong.

You can get an Enlight 420W or Thermaltake 420W (they are made by same oem and carry the HPC-420 lable) for $55. They are quiet and perform well. The antec is better according to anandtech's 4 power supply shootout (antec, enermax, thermaltake, and vantec). However, the Enlight/Thermaltake are both more than adequate for a loaded P4 machine.

it should work out for ya!

Quote from my PM's :)

Max Load Current +5V@50A, +3.3V@28A, +12V@18A, -5V@0.8A, -12V@1.0A, +5VSB@2.5A
Combined Power +3.3V & +5V 230W Plus+12V 422W, -12V 12W, -5V 4W,

From the spec sheet on that particular model. Now I need to find the other ones and compare. Looks like a good one to me. Of the 20+ reviews on newegg, only 1 was negative which bodes well.

Allied 450W Specs:
Max Load Current +5V@50A, +3.3V@28A, +12V@18A, -5V@0.8A, -12V@1.0A, +5VSB@2.5A
Combined Power +3.3V & +5V (230W Plus) & +12V (422W)

Antec True 430W Specs:
Max Load Current +5V@36A, +3.3V@28A, +12V@20A, -5V@0.5A, -12V@1.0A, +5VSB@2.0A
Combined Power +5V, +3.3V & +12V (410W)

Enermax EG465 Specs:
Max Load Current +5V@35A, +3.3V@35A, +12V@33A, -5V@1.0A, -12V@1.0A, +5VSB@2.2A
Combined Power +3.3V & +5V (200W) & +12V (460W)

Thermaltake/Enlight 420W Specs:
Max Load Current +5V@40A, +3.3V@30A, +12V@18A, -5V@0.3A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@2.0A
Combined Power +3.3V & +5V (220W) & +12V(420W)

The only spec I couldn't find was the combined +3.3V and +5V of the Antec PSU. Anyone know if that value can be computed?

The Antec value is not listed since they do not tie the +3.3 and +5 together like other power supplies.

Liteon 300W Server PSU @ $19 + $7 P4 connector.

Max Load Current +5V@40A, +3.3V@30A, +12V@12A, -5V@.3A, -12V@.5A, +5VSB@1.0A
Combined Power +3.3V & +5V (250W)

This PSU is vastly underrated at 300W. As you can see, it performs at 400W levels on the +5V and +3.3V rails. The only weak part is the +12V, but that's not usually a problem since HDs and CD-ROMs usually consume less than 2 Amps each. The PSU is extremely well built, and very competitively priced. Remember, this PSU is designed for servers, designed to last.

That would be a issue for me. This computer which I am planning on upgrading has a CDRW, CDROM, DVD, and a 120GB HD. I intend on putting in an additional 1-3 hard drives in the future. 12A on the +12V isn't going to cut it.

I dunno about WD, but my Seagates and Maxtors draw .8Amps each, and my opticals never exceed 2Amps. But it's your choice, just offering a cheap alternative.

I've got one of the Lite-On's, just finished sleeving it tonight! It's going in my 8RDA+ system to replace an anemic Channelwell that came with the case it's in.

One thing to note about this PS: the main connector is very short, only about 11-12" long. Directron does offer an extension for this for about $2 on the same page as the Lite-On.

On the other hand, 2 of the extensions are <U>27"</U> long! As these were made for Compaq servers, the extensions are not the "standard" lengths. This would be a great PS for a full-tower case!
