antec TP II 480W or antec Neo HE 500W or which antec

Hello,

I have the following system
C2D E6300, 160GB HDD, 1GB RAm, 945GM based mobo, a generic power supply which came with the case. I am using On board graphics.

I want to change the PSU cos I suspect that this generic CPU has only 8A on a single 12V rail.
I am wondering if I should go for TP II 480W or Neo HE 500W.

1. I do not plan to do SLI or crossfire in next 1.5 years at least
2. I plan to add a direct x 10 or a direct x 9 graphics card later but I am not a hardcore gamer.
3. I plan to connect 2 80 mm fans or 1 120 mm and 1 80 mm fan to my system.

We have only cooler masters or antec power supplies available here in india.

So which power supply should I go for?

1. I heard that there are some problems with antec neo HE PSU.
2. I also heard that the Neo HE build quality if not that good.
3. With Neo HE can I connect the fans In my case?
4. Will there be any voltage/current drop due to modular cables?
5. Will the 120mm fan of TP II 480 W be an advantage for cooling the CPU because it sits on the top of the CPU and sucks the air from there?
6. Any disadvantage of single 80mm fan in Neo HE 500W
7. The difference is abt $20 for me.

So which PSU I should go for?
Any other antec PSU can u suggest for my config?

1. I heard that there are some problems with antec neo HE PSU. There were some compatibility problems with ASUS motherboards earlier in the year but, they have been corrected with later revisions of the power supply according to Antec.
2. I also heard that the Neo HE build quality if not that good. The NeoHE is the BEST power supply that Antec makes now, IMO. They are rated to be 80% or greater efficiency. (The HE stands for High Efficiency).
3. With Neo HE can I connect the fans In my case? Yes. You can connect the case fans to the motherboard headers if the fans have a 3 pin power connector. If they have a 4 pin molex then you can connect them directly to a cable from the power supply. If they come with a 3 pin power connector then you can use an adaptor to connect them directly to the power supply, if needed.
4. Will there be any voltage/current drop due to modular cables? Any voltage drop would be negligible, at best.
5. Will the 120mm fan of TP II 480 W be an advantage for cooling the CPU because it sits on the top of the CPU and sucks the air from there? This is dabateable. The reasoning a few years ago was that it would aid in cooling by pulling the hot air from the CPU through the power supply and out the case. The downside is that it will make the PSU run hotter since it is taking in warm air. The PSU fan will then have to ramp up and work harder to exhaust the hot air from the supply. The components within the supply will also run hotter. My opinion is - just rely on the case fan to exhaust the warm air from the case.
6. Any disadvantage of single 80mm fan in Neo HE 500W In my opinion there is no disadvantage of the single 80mm fan. Whether it is 80mm or 120mm they will still work.
7. The difference is abt $20 for me.

So which PSU I should go for? I would purchase the Neo HE over any True Power PSU.
Any other antec PSU can u suggest for my config? I would suggest downgrading to the NeoHE 430W model. The 500W model is massive overkill for your system in it's current state. The 430W model will be enough for any single card graphics solution (Except the nVidia GX2 - I'm unsure about that one since it's two graphics cores in one PCI slot. Someone feel free to correct me.)

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I have one last query.
I am getting a secondhand Thermaltake purepower powersupply from somebody for a lesser price.

1. This is ATX 1.2 standard I think, has 20 pin motherboard connector.
2. has a single 12V rail with 18A
3. Is 6 month old
4. I do not get any warranty in india.

Any opinion on this option.

Will the 18A be enough?
Any disadvantage of 20 pin connector since I need to use 24 pin connector for my mobo?
