HI
I have a Antec SX840 case. Also, I just bought 4 Panaflo L1a 92mm fans to install in the case. I have stared the case mod by removing the fan grids on the back of the case. After looking at the back of the case, it looks like it is gonna be a very tight fit for 2 92mm fans. Also, the hole placement for the mounting screws looks like it will be hard to do. This is my first case mod and it looks like I am gonna need some advice on how to get those fans on the back without messing the case up.
AND AND ALL HELP IS NEEDED!!!!
Thanks

I don't think 92mm fans can fit in the antec sx840, the plastic fan holders are for 80mm fans. Your best bet would be do cut some hole at the side, top and front of your case and mount the fans accordingly.

I wouldn't hack up the case. I have a SX830 with 4 80mm fans and my case temps are the same as ambeint room temp. If you just want to mod the case go for it but I don't think you are going to improve its cooling by all that much as it is already very good.

dadx2mj, just wondering what fans do you use?

The 2 Panaflo 92mm fans WILL NOT fit side by side in the Antec Sx840 case. I measured first and then tried to shall we say,, "finesse" the fans in side by side. Sadly,,, they won't go. You can put one on the bottom to the left side of the case and the second above it to the right and it will work without a problem. You will have to remove the plastic card guide to do it that way.

pghpooh, is it like too wide by a little bit or a lot? i was thinking maybe one could sand the edges just enough to fit...

im sure this isnt all neccessary, but to mod just to mod for me :)

dadx2mj ,,, What Sunon fans are you using on the back of your case??? And, how is the noise level???? My biggest reason for using the Panaflo 92mm fans was they moved a decent amount of air and, they are quiet. Keeping the case as quiet as possible is very important to me as the puter will be located in the living room and the wife has hearing so sensitive she can hear what I am thinking!!!! :D

To answer your questions about putting the 92mm fans side by side..
The inside measurements of the case is 176mm. (using a tape measure) 2-92mm fans side by side add up to 184mm. Is you shave the plastic on the fan housings you might just end up splitting the fans. As for shaving or cutting the case,,, you will have to cut the metal rim on which the side door swings open on. Or, the mobo tray has a 'step" in it that will have to be cut out. Also,, there are a few rivets on the front of the case that need cut. And, there are holes on the front of the case in which the front cover uses to attach itself to the case.
The fans will work in a vertical stacking. BUT,, NOT SIDE BY SIDE..
I'm sure someone with more experience and the right tools can make the fans fit. But, this first time builder and case mod rookie will go for the easiest way!!! If I had been able to get better specs on this case as far as using the 92mm fans,, I think I would have just said no and bought a different case.

Dunno what kind of hot-running stuff you have, but four PCP&C 80mm Silencers keep my sx1030 nice and cool, others report similar results with 80mm L1A Panaflos. The beauty of the sx-Antecs is that they require no mods for really good cooling....Maybe you can exchange the 92's for 80's, or trade somebody, save yourself a lot of work.

Johneetrash I put Sunon High Outputs in my case I would not call them real loud but you can definatly hear them. If noise is a big factor go for some Panaflo's or check out 2cooltek I think I remember seeing there that Sunon had a quiet running fan as well.

I put 4 80mm Panaflo's in my Antec SX830. Really quiet, and keeps my computer nice and cool :) Would be interesting to see how you do the 4 92mm Panaflos though.

Are those 80mm Panaflo's more quite then those Antec's? I got 4 Antecs in my sx830 right now. Only complain is the PS noise and my Alpha 6025/Global Win HS/F.

Hi
Right now, I am not sure about doing the mod on the case to add the Panaflo. I will give it more thought.
One thought is to put a 80mm and a 92mm in the front and do the same in the back of the case. That looks like it can be done without much trouble.
Another thought is 2 92mm onthe front and finding 2 80 mm fans that can move a total of 85.4 cu ft od air as the panaflo fans are rated at 42.7 cu ft each. The 2 80mm fans must be quiet!!! Hopefully under 34db or less.

lundog22 The 92mm Panaflo fans are rated at 42.7 cu ft air movement at 27db. The Antec fans are rated at 34.4cfm and 30 db.
By using the panaflo I get more air movement and more quiet fans. (and more headaches trying to figure out how to do it!!! LOLOL)

Grendel99 What panaflo fans did you use????

One last thing before I call it a night. I am gonna do a search on the boards here for info about db sound levels. Gonna try to find info that will tell me (for example) that 27 db is equal to a pin drop and 35 db is equal to normal voice levels.

when trying to figure out total cfm, dont forget that the power supply fan will be exhausting some air too, so you can have 2 intake fans in the front pushing more air than the 2 exhaust fans in the back, but try to negate the difference of CFM with the power supply's exhaust :) im thinking about just sticking a panaflow 92mm and 80mm in the front of my case, and have 2 80mm panaflos along with my enermax power supply exhausting

[edit]does anyone know an approximate cfm rating of enermax power supplies?[/edit]

I have a SX830:

I got rid of the antec case fans and replaced them with 80mm Silencer fans from PC Power & Cooling. These fans are truly awesome.

Check em out

here if you have not already consider these bad boys. They move 28cfm @ ONLY 20 db!!!

Most of us completely over do case cooling. We should do the calculations before "blindly" addding more fans / bigger fans. In an sx830, 50 cfm is more than sufficient to keep the case interior at room temps. Believe it or not, the sx830 has less than 2 cubic feet of interior volume! So two silencers moving 56cfm (no impedance) are changing the air in my case over 25 times a minute. Honestly, no one needs more than that.

The only good reason to mod your case is to make more quiet, look better, and ensure proper airflow. Adding a top blow hole is good, I haven't, but "hey". Also puting a fan on the side to blow directly on your GPU, memmory, chipset, etc. is good. But a lot of good HSF's are induced draft...so putting a fan right over the HSF can actually lower the performance of your HSF in some instances (the HS fan and your special fan are blowing at one another...competing).

Oh ya...ANTEC PS's are noisy buggers IMO. Think I'm going to get an Enermax 330W Whisper PS to replace it.

The panaflo 80MML1 are a little quieter.
Here are the specs

Antec 80MM (Stock fans w/Perforamance series)
24 CFM 24 DB

Panaflo 80L1A
24 CFM 21 DB

My PC is loud as hell, its driving me nut :frown: :|

The Antec PS that came with the sx830 is loud as hell. The 4 Antec 80mm Fans inside my Case make it sound like a mini wind tunnel.... The Alpha PAL6035/Global 38cfm Fan didn't help a bit when it comes to lower the noise level (but do keep my CPU cool)....

Compare this to a ultra quiet DELL (less fans of course) ....... :(
