I'm getting ready to build my first computer and I'm thinking about this case. Anyone have any advice for ole Fred. Also, it has 2 optional fan mounts. Whats a good fan to add to this case or any case for that matter. Heres whats goin in, if it matters.
AMD 1800xp
Epox 8kha+ or shuttle Ak31 (not sure yet)
Geforce 3 Ti-200 or 500
Audigy
512 megs DDr Pc2100
IBM 40 gig 7200
Pioneer DVD
Teac 1.44mb Floppy
Thanks for any advice, I guess I'm really looking for something easy to work on.

It I were you I would go for the Antec 1030b case .... Its really nice...
The only down side is that it has a non-removable main-board tray

I am using the Antec SX600 with an Enermax 300W Power Supply. I think if you have the room, and you don't need to carry your computer around a lot, then you should consider the SX1040.

The reason I bought the SX600 instead of the SX1000 was because it is smaller, has almost all of the features (1 less space for fan, 1 less 5.25 bay). But the SX600 still has 3 5.25-in drive bays, which is plenty for most people.

Is a 300 watt power supply sufficient for what I'm building? I guess I was under the impression that I would need a 320 or 350 watt power supply.

If you want the Antec SX635 then go for it, everything you have listed should fit ok.

Not everyone wants a full tower or workstation server size case such as the SX1040 or 1030.

I have both an SX1000 and an SX600, and both are great, just depends if you need/want the size. I'd go for the bare case and pick the power supply of your choice. I like the Enermaxes better than the Antec 300, although the latter is okay, too. I just don't think you can go wrong with any of these choices.

I don't understand why EVERYBODY'S answer is "bigger is better". The 10xx is overkill for 90% of the users out there, and the 8xx is overkill for 75% of the users out there. For the equipment that Fred is putting in the system (doesn't seem to be a need for excessive external or hard drive bays), I think the 635 would do just fine, it still offers good accessibility and plenty of drive bays to suit his needs.

Fred, sounds like a great system. Personally, I would go with the Shuttle board, at $80 it's the best deal out there. I would also get a retail CPU so you get the extra warranty (in case something goes "wrong" with your first build) as well as Crucial memory, having that lifetime warranty is nice. Get a couple of 80mm Panaflo L1A's or M1A's in there and your system temps should be fine.

I've heard good things about both mobo's, I've decided on the Epox....seems like it gets better reviews and is only $16.00 more than the Shuttle.

<< in their kt266a comparison, THG says shuttle board is crap >>

And just because the beloved Dr Tom says it, it's GOT to be true, right?

Geeze.

THG's arguments against the Shuttle board was convincing... it benched near the bottom of all benchmarks, and it doesn't have any features that separates itself from the competition.
i.e., on board raid, extra usb headers, good onboard hardware sound, nice overclocking features, etc.

The Alpha 8045's don't fit on the Shuttle's either. They fit on the Epox board fine.

I got an alpha 8045 an a epox 8KHA+ and Yap alpha fits nicely on 8KHA+, u may have sure of that :)

Anywayy if u are thinking on a good Overlock u better buy a 350/400 power suply from antec cuz antec permit to regulate the 12v/5volts line and the 3.3volts line(vio) :)

i bought the same case and replaced the psu with an enermax because it gave me problems with my epox 8k7a, but works well on my sister's gigabyte mobo. i also modded the case so i could use 92mm fans instead of 80mm fans.
