The back 120mm fan and the 80mm of my Antec TrueBlue 480 were a little too noisy for me, so i made up a ghetto noise absorber outta a small box. The box's top pieces where removed, and one of the short sides was remoced. I put that foam bed material in there, and taped it to the back of my case. I had about 1.5" clearance between the fan exhausts and the foam. Noise dropped about 50% for the "whoosh" portion of the noise. Unforunately, my case and cpu temp rose 8C.

Does this mean that i wasnt giving enough clearance for the exhaust? or is that normal no matter the clearance.

Somewhat unrelated, when i take off the case side, temp drops about 3C for board and CPU. Does this mean that I need more airflow *into* my case as well?

Im running a 1800+ at 200x10.5 with SLK947U + Enermax 92mm.
2x512 Mushkin PC3500 level 2
Abit NF7-S ver 2
Cables are extremely neat, none visable for more than 2 inches if looking through window.

Temps: (as supplied by winbond hardware monitor) (Ambient = 78F)
Case side off Idle: 29C, 41C
Case side on Idle: 31C, 42.5C
Case side on Load: 34C, 46C
Case side on with ghetto silencer on back Idle: 38C, 48C
Case side on with ghetto silencer on back Load: 40C, 53C
*when temps are 40C, 53C, I get blue screen during game. I can play at least 2 hrs if temps are below this range. Blue screen makes me believe my ram becomes too hot. Generally, if my cpu is at fault, I get an error posted by the game itself and i go into windows.

I kinda want a quiet system, but i cant sacrifice the stability. Im looking at sub 50$ budget.
Any suggestions? (I have not modded out the 120mm grille holes)

thx

well if your case runs cooler with the side panel off, then its definately not getting enough airflow. usually cooled cases actually run cooler with the side panel on. the side panel helps direct the cool air in and hot air out. (assuming that you have enough fans and they are positioned correctly). i think your best bet would be to lose the box during gaming if it's easy to remove. i mean, im sure your speakers will overpower your fan and psu during gameplay 🙂 another solution is to use sound mats.. either the akasa, spire kinds, or get dynamat which is meant for cars. the dynmat is the most exspensive of course.

an alternative so sound mats, is to use a rubber spray. you can get that at an automotive store. just take everything out and spray the open areas of your case and it'll absorb the sound nicely. another member on this forum has done this before.

with less sound, you are probbly looking at higher temps since all that sound absorbing material also insulates heat. if you really need a quiet AND cool case, i think you might have to go for a sturdier case that won't resonate as much.
