Antec Sonata II woes.....

Hi, I built my friend a computer about 9 months ago with an Antec Sonata II, and last night I discovered that his power supply was running really hot, and making a high pitched whine, (also the fan on it was really loud). I looked a bit closer, and it seems the back case fan died, which explains the hot power supply.

My question is, because of the issues with the Smart Power 450 W I have heard about, is it safer to just replace the power supply now, before it totally dies? And also, is it easy to replace the back case fan, seeing as how it is secured with robber grommets, and not screws?

It's very easy to replace the back fan, just squeeze the grommets out of the hole with some pliers.

You could try the PSU with just a new case fan but replacing it wouldn't be a bad idea if it is squealing.

I'd replace that PSU for sure. Those things are know to have issues. Get a good brand when you get a new one though.

also antec fans (at least the case ones suck). mine on my p160 both died pretty shortly. i just ripped out the rubber grommets, because i didnt think of pliers and i didnt have any. i just use kitchen wires to put it back up, silent but ugly. you can buy rubber grommets from antec.com if you tear yours.

svc.com and performance-pcs.com both have some replacement rubber gromets for much cheaper than the antec store.

yes, replace the psu. antec had a bad run of PSUs a while back, so there's alot of bad stock still around. since you bought it recently, RMA it, and keep the replacement as a spare or sell it on ebay. i'd suggest a replacement, but i'd need to know the system specs and his budget. for now, i'll recommend the Corsair 520W... let me know if you have any problems with that suggestion, hehe, and we can figure out a better solution.

thanks for the info, people. I will be extra careful when pulling out those rubber grommets so i dont need to buy more. I'll get him to rma the ps, but from the sounds of things a different ps will be in order anyway. I was thinking of buying the same ps that i have, an Enermax 535 W for about 125 canadian.
