Antec SmartCool fans

Thinking on getting a couple of these for a rig I'll be building for a friend. They seem pretty cool.

BTW, since the motherboard has only one case fan connector, wich fan would you plug in to be thermally controlled? intake or exhaust?

They are decent fans...Very quiet even running full blast.

I twist the sensor to make them run as fast as they will go.

Mount it as the exhaust...Making it the intake will probably only allow it to run a certain speed even if the system temperature rises.

I'll be buying two of these, to use as intake and exhaust. The one connected to the motherboard will be the one that blows out.

Do these fans automatically adjust itselves? Or do they have to be connected to the motherboard in order to be thermally controlled?

I bought the 120mm Smartcool.....big mistake. It has more motor clicking noise than any 120 I've ever heard. Terrible. If the temp control works I'll never know. Wouldn't want this fan in any computer I own.

Wow.. are you serious? The stock Antec fan that came with my 3700 is rather quiet. I wouldn't think that Antec would make such a noisy fan...

I am using one of their 80mm "dumb" fans, got them for $2.50... so as long as they don't stop, I really don't care how loud they are because for the price, what else should I expect? 🙂 But seriously, the Antec fans I have are working great so far, not too loud, and do the job well.

I love the Antec stock fan and my Antec 120mm Pro Fan. They both make perfect compliments for the FAN ONLY connectors of the TruePower 380s. I find the motor noise and whining quite minimal. Considering my Vantec un"Stealth" fan at 950 RPM is easily more louder than my Antec Pro at 1150RPM.

One thing for sure...I would never connect any 120m/m fan to a motherboard fan header.

Those Antecs are super quiet and like Bluefront sezzz...You really cannot tell if they change speed's...That is why I twisted the temp probe to make them run as fast as they can.

I tried them in Sonata and SLK3700 BQE builds and moved on to different 120's...Not a bad fan...But certainly not up there as far as 120's go.

FYI - I recently purchased an Antec TriCool 120mm Antec fan and find the only quiet setting is Low. The Medium and High settings make much more noise than the Anec fans that came with my P160. Have not used the Smartcool.

I guess I'll have to give the SmartCools a try. You can't really tell if it will be loud until you hear them... and the only way I can do that is by buying them.

The other fans the people posted here don't seem to have a temp. sensor, and thats precisely what I liked about the SmartCools, the fact that they'll spin down when system temp is low.

yeah, hard to fine a good thermally controlled fan. Which is what TruePower PSU's nifty with their FAN ONLY connectors.

if you need a good thermally controlled 80mm fan, I would recommend the Arctic Cooling Pro TC

I would trust temp sensing fans. It places too much reliance on the temp sensors on the mb. What if temp sensing fails or becomes widly inaccurate? I'd rather use software or fan controller to manually control the speed.
