ANTEC Smart Power 450 W Exhaust Fan Stalled?

I just built a new rig with an Antec Sonata II case. The Stock PSU seems great, but today I noticed the back fan on the PS exhaust was not spinning.

The Power Supply has 2 fans. The one facing towards the drive bays is spinning. I assum this is sucking air into the powersupply for cooling, then exausting it out through the back of the case.

How do i get the rear fan runnign agian? I checked on my ASUS P5K-E mobo and there is only one FAN POWER 3 pin input.

The only other possible power pins i have left are an extra one for PCI-E vid. cards, and one small 4 pin that I can't figure out where it goes?

Thanks for the help in advance

The fan is not controlled by the bios or the motherboard but rather by the psu itself. Try to run the computer hard and see if the fan spins up under load. If not, the unit is bad and time to rma. PSU fans are controlled by temperature sensors inside the psu and will speed up when things heat up and slow down when things cool down.

I'd be wary of running any unit afflicted by the Fuhhjyu syndrome, leave alone one without a fan! RMA that sucker ASAP!

The power supply that comes with the Sonata II is deffinatly not a great PSU. The smartpowers are pretty low end. I have 2 Sonta II cases, both of the power supplies died after just over a year old. The rear fan should be spinning, maybe something is blocking it?

Damn stevty and everyone else, you can't read nor click links?

The answer was linked above...........

The rear external fan on a Smart Power ONLY spins up when the thermals inside the power supply require it. When it does that, it then has two fans working.....the fan that's inside the case blowing into the power supply, and the external-facing fan that's blowing out from the power supply to the outside.

Normally, the rear fan is NOT spinning.....only the fan that's "inside" the case.

Here's a link to his power supply:

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=26450

Now, please take some time to read the words printed on the page.....specifically these:

Unique Dual Fans Technology: exhaust fan starts to spin when the power supply reaches certain temperatures to ensure proper airflow, the second fan spins on power up

Hope that ends the confusion. The external fan does not spin up on power up.....only if the thermals require it to do so.....otherwise, only the internal fan spins on power up, exactly what the OP is describing and is EXACTLY how the power supply's fans ARE supposed to work.

And if you haven't smelled anything burning, you are still ok. :laugh:Believe me, it would definitely happen should the fan be stuck.
