Someone confirmed a while ago by emailing Arctic Silver that Antec Silver is in fact the same. Antec worked out a licensing deal with Arctic Silver a while ago.

I use Antec REFERENCE (that's it's real name btw...) and it is every bit as good as the ASII I had just before it. I haven't tried ASIII yet so I can't compare those products but I can say that the Antec Reference was still wet between the HSF and the CPU core after 6 months of grueling usage (AXP Palomino chip). And it's locally available at Best Buy so you can get it today if you need and not have to wait for a shipment to arrive at the house.

Hmm.. I'd recommend the Arctic Silver III thermal compound - I don't know if it also comes in the Antec name, but this is the first I've heard of this "co-branding" - I thought Arctic Silver's website says that there are several imitation arctic silver out there, and that might apply to the "Antec Silver". I might be behind in the news on this thermal compound thing, but since I'm already using the AS III on my cpu, why should I worry?

If you don't really care about the brand names, it's a thermal compound after all - it should work almost the same way.

What happened to Shin ETSU or Artic Silver Ceramique, that are supposed to blow AS3 out of the water?

I posted a trivial rant a while back about switching from ASIII to the fake AS clone with the red cap that is shown on the ASIII site.

I had used ASIII for a while but had some of the dreaded "Silver Grease" in the tube with the red cap. The Silver Grease (or whatever it really is) was easier to apply and my temps actually dropped - yes, I said dropped.

Strange, I know, but I used it a long time ago and never really had any complaints. Switched to ASIII because I thought it was the right thing to do. Had cpu temps in the 50C range no matter how many times I cleaned and re-applied the stuff. I actually printed the instructions the last time and followed them line by line. Cleaned it one last time and went back with the Silver Grease and my temps are 48C right now but it's a little warm in here. My experience during the past couple of weeks shows an average of 45 to 48 after an hour of gaming. As stated in my other post on the subject, it could be lower if I turned the fans up but I keep them at a reasonable level so I can hear myself think. Others may get different results but I am happy with mine.

One more note: As far as the fake stuff cooking off.... I screwed up big time last weekend when I swapped fans. The cpu fan fired up and I slid the PC back on the shelf. Later that evening it shut down and I discovered that the fan stopped spinning. All it would do is twitch a little when power was applied. The temp had hit 69C and the board shut if down. I R&R'd the fan and fired it up. Temps dropped to 42C in about 5 minutes but it was pretty cool in here. Temps have been consistent since then and I haven't seen any evidence that the grease had cooked away.

I use the Shin-etsu MicroSI and while it certainly doesn't "blow ASIII out of the water" it did improve the load temp by 1c and it's far less messy and easier to clean up. The only down side is it's a bit more expensive per application than ASIII.
