I assume it does not hurt to have a 13 amp cord though so for just 50 cents more I think I will do that.

I got some of the 14GA power cables from Monoprice, and boy, are they heavy-duty. Pretty thick, and a little hard to bend.

Edit: Wow, Monoprice must have raised the prices on their power cords. I could have sworn when I bought ten of their 6' 14GA cords, they were around $1.50 ea. Now they're $2.70 ea.

still dirt cheap and its the shipping that makes the price difference even smaller. if I am going to get one I think the 16AWG(13 amp) makes the most sense. I believe I have an old 10 amp power supply cord that will do the trick until I order a new one.

yeah you cant really overkill on wire size, i actually ordered all 14ga cables from monoprice even for my server which pulls at most 100w. You just dont NEED anything more than 18ga for a 500w system.

18 AWG is good up to 2.3 amperes

16 AWG is good up to 3.7 amperes.

14 AWG is good up to 5.9 amperes.

Edit: this is for bundled applications.

See my next post.

translation please...

The figures above are for wires in a bundle and are considered very conservative.

I need to make a correction the amps I suggested are based on the chart Here:
http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

For open air chassis wiring ( not bundled ) the numbers are quite a bit higher:

18 AWG is good up to 16 amperes

16 AWG is good up to 22 amperes.

14 AWG is good up to 32 amperes.

Any of these is more than adequate for you power supply. Do not mislead yourself. This is the incoming circuit. Your power supply isn't going to pull anywhere close to any of these.
