Antec P182 mod question

Hey Have any of you tried this. I like the fact that the new Antec P183 have moved the fan in front of the hard drive cage(bottom). For those with the p182 do you think a fan can fit and work properly in the current p182?

Without taking out my hard drive cage i took the filter of and visually measured with a ruler 110mm for both the height and length. i stuck a qtip swab and scrapped it and measured roughly about 25mm for the width. Now the width i would guess would have to be a little smaller than the 25mm say around 20 mm. Has anyone thought about/or have you done this. That way the middle fan at the bottom can be removed so its not as tight and i can better manage my cables? What do you all think? Thanks for any info

ps I dont mean to cut any metal but to just slide it in that area

You could probably get any number of things to work, even if the P182 doesn't naturally provide for a forward intake fan (in front of the cage). But I note that the picture shows an intake fan on the rear of the upper cage. I can comment on that.

Fans mounted behind the drive cages for intake -- may be less effective at intaking air, but they're also going to emit less noise.

Now -- for me at the moment -- I'm evaluating whether I can replace 25mm-wide intake fans on a CM Stacker 830 (which fit in removeable drive cages) -- with 38mm-wide fans.

Again -- if you have a problem with putting a 120x25mm fan in the location of interest, you might consider a smaller fan -- like an 80x15mm Zalman OP-1. I've seen others (I think -- OCZ) manufacturing these 80x15 fans. With this, you would have to look elsewhere in the case for intake possibilities with a larger 120mm or 140mm fan.

what I'm saying here: If the primary objective is hard-disk cooling, the smaller fans will suffice. If the dual-objective was HD cooling AND general case intake, then you'd have to compensate. But basically, with the obstruction of hard disks, air-flow would still be limited with the larger fan-option, and you'd want to augment with additional intake.

Thanks for the reply BanzaiDuck. The fan in front of the upper cage is the one i use as an intake for cool air into the case. The main purpose of the bottom fan would be to cool the hard drives. I have 3 of them. i dont like the fan being in between the psu and the hd cages as its a little cramped thats when im going to try it. Im going to either use a smaller fan like 92 or 100 mm fan with a depth of about 20mm or use a 120mm fan but ill have to dremel

Ok i finally got it off. It was a pain. That bracket is held by 4 bits/divits or whatever you call it. I couldnt fit my demel at the correct angel to use one of the circular cutters to cut it of so i had to use something that looks like a drill bit to drill thru it. After that it comes off. I did manage to cut my thumb. Not when trying to take the bracket off but trying to take the bottom fan in the middle out. A 20mm fan will fit but the bracket wont align to the holes in the front so i need to think of a way to keep the fan in place which may be some sort of tie down method. Also the depth of the fan has to be smaller than 25mm. im going to look for a fan with a 12 to 20 mm depth. Do you all think i should cut the middle fan bracket out all together?

Are you talking about the little black bracket that holds the fan in the middle of that bottom chamber? Taking a drill to it was bit excessive, but I found out myself that there's a slight trick to it.. You need to simply press in on the big "side" tab to release the little notches holding it onto the metal frame and it pops out..

I used a dremel to remove that bracket that is in the first picture marked fan here. Where the hard drive (lower) cage screws into thats what i used a small dremel drill bit type tool. I cut myself trying to remove the middle lower fan i was pulling using my hands and some how cut my thumb

Oh, I see, my mistake.

What are you going to screw that hard drive cage onto though, if you shift it? Although I suppose it doesn't necessarily need to be screwed onto anything.
If I were going through all the trouble of doing that though, I would get rid of that middle piece as well. You're not going to get any more space on the HD side simply removing the fan - that only helps with room on the PSU side. The P183 also has that section removed IIRC.

Hey Darkrogue the hard drive cage when you push it in is pretty secure. To either push it in or pull it out it takes a little force so it sits in place. Its not loose and it doesnt move or wiggle so it doesnt need to be screwed in. Also i think i am going to try to remove that middle bracket but ill do that when i take it apart and put new things in it as one of the grommets that hold it in is a little too close to the mobo and one slip up and no more mobo
