Well I got the regular sized coolpad from circuit cit today. The traveler size was way too small. I told them Dell had it for cheaper and when the sales associate looked it up, he pricematched the the smaller traveler sized one. So basically I got it for $17+tax (originally $30 - hehe). The full size coolpad is totally comfortable on my lap. The flat feet on the bottom makes it more comfortable on my lap. I love it! Not that I had a heat problem but like the assurance of it running cool. Thanks a lot guys!

hey guys, sorry for the delay on this. i've been testing it extensively and haven't had a chance to post anything meaningful here until now. anyways here's what i decided:

after using this for a little over a week now, it does seem kinda loud, but mostly when you have nothing playing music in the background. around 25dB or so. it does cool the laptop pretty well. i did notice it took off a bunch of the heating from the hard drive area and the RAM slot also. it's also nice that it raises the dvd drive so that it's easier to eject cds/dvds and such when using the drive. also very nice that using it doesn't make you lose a usb port as it uses the port and allows you to plug another usb device into the usb plug. when sitting idle, the cooler and the laptop got extremely cool. pretty close as to what it would be when turned off. also, noticed a lot less crashing in my system since getting it. used to have quite a few crashes in during a week. at least 4-7 crashes. only had 1 crash, and that was due to me trying to run 15 memory extensive programs at the same time. was testing to see if the system still crashed since it had been a while. it's very nice, but i don't think you can use it on your lap. it has an aluminum top and the rest is made of plastic. it also has 4 feet with rubber on it so it doesn't slide all over the place. you can also substitute the powering for it with a 5v power supply from an old cd player instead of using the usb port. at least that's what i'm told. as it will plug in and work. also, it has a slot for putting the usb cable away for easy moving to and from work/rooms. also has a on/off switch in case you want to turn it off and leave it plugged in. hope this helps.

Thanks.

Looking at the previous posts Teezle and Eriqesque say the Coolpad is made by Targus. A quick check on their website confirms this. The only issue with the Coolpad is there are no fans, the unit just raises your laptop to increase airflow to the bottom of the laptop. I personally would go for a unit that had fans to introduce an air cooled atmosphere.

How hot does your laptop have to get before the heatpipe one makes sense? Obviously it won't make a difference if the lapotp isn't hot enough to cause the phase change, and because of the inefficiencies of conducting the heat from the laptop to the heatpipe, I'm not sure it would be worth it for moderate temperatures.

Anyone have any experience with it on a variety of laptops?

I can't speak from experience but what you are saying makes sense. I do know from hearing from others that there isn't much advantage to one of these units.
