Antec Earthwatts 500 vs NeoHE 500 (or 550)

I have a Earthwatts 500 I got for a good deal about 5 months ago powering my opteron 165 setup. I am getting a NeoHE, either 500 or 550, as an RMA replacement for my SP-500. Which of these (if either) is adequate for a Q6600 or slightly faster setup with a single vid card? I know we don't have the 9800 specs yet but if I wait that will be the card I get. I would be overclocking definitly but have 0 plans to ever do SLI.

If you have both PSU's which would you use? Yes, selling one and getting a corsair or seasonic would be possible but I would prefer to avoid the hassel since I am lazy.

Thanks!

Any partiuclar reason? I was leaning towards the neohe due simply to the three rails vs two but thats the reason I asked.

I read that review back before I picked up the Earthwatts 500 and I have no doubt that it would run a moderatly-heavily overclocked quad-core single vid card system. Unforuntatly, he has not done a NeoHE review so I can't compare which is why I am asking if the NeoHE will be better than the all-ready good earthwatts.

It does not matter to me which is better since I will soon have both for no addtional cost. Either way I have to rip everything out of my P180 to build the new machine in there so the workload is the same.

Do you know of an equally in-depth review of the NeoHE?

I had the same choice to make and I stuck with the EarthWatts for my other rig. Both the NeoHE and EarthWatts (in addition to the Trio) are built by Seasonic (SS). Since SS psu's typically have 12V rails without OCP they are in fact single rail units. However I cannot confirm that the NeoHE is truly a single 12V rail, but according to JonnyGURU the EarthWatts and Trio are. SPCR says the hum of the EarthWatts is slightly louder than the NeoHE, and both are quiet until you pass a 250W load. The EarthWatts has better efficiency and voltage regulation, but it does lack modular cables and has a dull grey housing. The NeoHE comes with a 5 yr. warranty vs. 3yr. on the Earthwatts.

Thanks for all the info guys! I don't care about the looks (this will go into my P180) so the earthwatts is fine there. I guess what I was curious about is if the 2x18a of the earthwatts is better/the same as the 3x17a of the NeoHE, even if they are basically one real rail. I am curious if it really is 36a vs 51a or if the actual is closer to the same.

Oh, and I believe I only get the remainder of my 3 years warranty on the NeoHE since it is a replacement for my SP-500. It arrives tomorrow (started the RMA process less than two weeks ago, go Antec) so I'll see which model they actually sent. They were going to do an earthwatts but I asked about modular cableing and they said "ok, we'll do a NeoHE instead". Seemed cool to me since I all-ready had the Earthwatts.

Max combined power available on the 12V rail:

EarthWatts 500 - 34A
NeoHE 500 - 38A
NeoHE 550 - 42A

omg u cant compare the earthwatt to the neo.

Thats funny.

NEO FTW! the 550W handled my quad fine. I reciently replaced it to the Quattro 850W which is another ballgame.

My recomendation goes NEO all the way.

Which is why i said its funny to compare the earthwatt to the neo. 42A vs 34A is a no brainer.

true but thats mobo issue....

Why is that a MB issue when I have no problem oveclocking C2D @ 3.46GHz with Antec Earthwatts 380, Antec Earthwatts 500, Antec SP350, Ultra V 400, Ultra V 500, Ultra X-Finity 500, and Ultra X-Finity 600?

Well, it end's up being the NeoHE 500 they sent, so now I'm comparing 38a vs 34a PSU with the earthwatts being generally more efficient (though not by much).

Ah well, it's all a moot point anyway since I won't be building a new machine for at least a month now, if not longer. Stupid bills... 🙁

Because over all the neoho have no issues basically with motherboards and booting the system!!

yet there are cases all the time where PSU`s can`t boot up a system that have been traced to the motherboard.

based on your statement there are issues with the Abit mobo booting with the NeoHo....
Like I said that is a motherboard issue!

Surely you honestly don`t think it is a PSU related issue???

Problem is not isolated to IP35 series. Use GOOG to get smart!
