Antec 900 Vibration.

This is really weird. My Antec 900 is vibrating so much. When I touch it I can feel that it just vibrates so much. NONE of my old computers did this. It usually will make this really weird noise until I touch the case, then it goes away until I take away my hand away from it. What can this be? I doubt it is the fans because I unplugged all of them and it still does it.

Did you check the power supply fan(s)?

could be something not tightened up enough.. could be your cpu cooler acting a fool..
could be a bad hard drive.. you know they spin insanely fast inside..

there are many ball bearings in a pc.. all fans.. hard drives.. have them.. something is dodgey with one of them is my guess..

i would systematically take things out and try a different power supply..


my 900 case doesnt shake in the least bit.. cool as an ice block..

All fans have ball bearings? Then why the huge price differences in fans. Color can't account for that much price difference. LED's are pretty inexpensive and lighted fans aren't even the most expensive.
 
Most likely HDDs ? remove /suspend them and check. Check your fan installations to make sure there is nothing loose. Use rubber screws/washers/feet etc. Avoid fan/fan, cage/cage, contacts. Two of those can simply be resonating. Otherwise disconnect fan by fan to pinpoint the cause.

Yeah, older hard drives can make quite a bit of noise. Doesn't the 900 have some kind of rubber vibe dampers for the HDD cage? If not, you'll have to rig something yourself. I've got the 1/8" cable clamps needed for bungee or shoelace suspensions. Just click the link in my sig.

Well the huge price difference in fans has alot to do with..

a.) quality of components used to make the fans..
b.) the cfm of the fan..
c.) life expenctancy of the fan..
d.) trusted name of a good company with a good product that knows they can charge more..


but yeah.. there are alot of ball bearings in a pc.. you would be suprised..

What about sleeve bearing, riffle bearing, SSO bearings, hydro wave and S-FDB bearings?
 
Yup fans can have sleeve bearings, modified sleeve (rifle, hydro wave, etc), one ball plus sleeve, or dual ball. You'd be surprised how quiet ball bearing fans can be like those 110 CFM coolermaster fans in my listing. Turn them down to 7 or 8 volts and they'll shock you. Many Sanyos also undervolt nicely too.

If the hard drive(s) turn out to be the source of the noise, and there aren't rubber drive bushings in the 900's HDD cages, then a better cage like the Kublai Kage (available separately soon) might be in order - starts at $20.00. Or rig a suspension as mentioned above.

If the fans are it, try switching them to a lower speed - each fan has a 3-position speed switch on it.

I'm starting to think you work for silverstone and they're the OEM for the rosewills. Lol.

I jest of course but, I honestly think you mention the Kublai Kage in every thread you've posted in on the front page. If I get bored enough later I'm going to try and count them.

. It may also be that you didn't completely clip one or more of the bay filler plates before you put the bezel back on.

Well I coined the name and I've had all other reasonably priced cages here (and reviewed or commented on them at http://www.techimo.com/reviews/ in the Hard Disk section - there are two separate cage reviews there) as I was using some older 10k SCSI drives here and needed some isolation badly. So I know whereof I speak. Even if you don't use the hot plug/swap feature it is the best one going right now and you don't have to mod your case to use it. I just wish they'd hurry up and get them into the channel so I could point to where to buy one. Or if you can get your hands on an original Cooler Master cage (stacker accessory) - the one made out of really heavy metal - it's the isolation champ but you may have to bend or cut metal to use it in your case (see the reviews for details) as it has flat sides. The latest rev. is made of much lighter metal and the newest one (the one you see only on CM's Taiwan web site) is made of unobtainium here in the states. So IDK how good that one is, except you wouldn't have to mod your case to use it.

And it's only in 5 other threads - you just wander the same gutters as moi... 😉

I have an Antec 900 case. Even with the fans on high it's loud but the case doesn't vibrate. The case does come with pre-installed rubber bushings for your hard drives.
Could be one of your side panels is loose.
 
I'm having this exact problem with a P182. There's some sort of vibration that occurs on a regular basis that causes something to make an annoying rattling sound. The sound goes away if I press on the top panel. It doesn't happen 100% of the time though. It can go hours and be nearly silent. It's a P182 with Nexus fans and aftermarket coolers on both the CPU and GPU, so it's VERY quiet until that damn vibration happens. So frustrating.
 
^ Definitely HDDs. You can use the thick foam tape as above to make 4 10mm feet and leave your noisiest HDDs on the bottom of the case on those (10mm squares to absorb all sorts of vibrations). As good as Antec cases are ? their 1mm rubber and even Fusion-style thick washers do not absorb vibration fully. Best way here ? touch parts of the case which can cause noise, locate those which vibrate/can vibrate and secure them. Same with fans/cages. Good rubber feet is a must for a quiet case for example Fusion?s back feet are perfect but fancy front ones make all the vibration noise.
 
The rattle you guys are chasing are quite possibly a loose case panel or rivet, especially if you can stop it with pressure applied to the case. Spring tabs and hooks on side panels are usual suspects, drive cages not secure, bezels loose and switches. Before I put a system in a box I sound proof or deaden. I'll actually suspend the case and tap w/ a fingernail. I use sheet rubber on all large panels and a spray on where I can't. When putting the system together I'll de-couple all the drives and fans, including those in the PSU so if I hear a rattle in my cases I know where the wife is hiding her toys!
 
At the bottom where the PSU goes in there's a little metal tab bent out to help hold the psu down when you put your compy on it's side. Make sure that is fitting snuggly against your psu because I could definetely see the PSU shaking a little bit and shaking the side panel withouth the window in it.

I use an Antec psu so it fits perfectly, but a different brand might have slightly smaller dimensions. Just a thought.
