Antec 450W Smart Power PSU question

fibes

Senior member
I just built my brother a computer with the Sonata II case (come w/ the 450w PSU). I noticed on the 12V rails that it ranges at about 12.1-12.2. Is this something I should be concered with? I understand Antec makes quality PSU's, and that's the reason I bought the case, but I never had a PSU exceed 12.0. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Don't rely on software readings; test the 3 positive rails with a ($20) digital multimeter. 🙂

ATX spec allows a 5% range in the +12v rails which equates to 11.4 - 12.6v. Anything above or below should be replaced.

Antec USED to be a reliable PSU maker. Antec has put so much price pressure on their OEM supplier(s) that corners have been cut. Reports of failing caps in their PSUs are fairly common right now. Right now it is safer to buy PSUs with the manufacturer's own name on them. For those that don't yet know, Channel Well actually makes most models of Antec PSUs. And CW is now selling their PSUs direct under their own name.

I've personally never had any problems with their TruePower Line, though SmartPower strikes me as a budget oriented line than would have more problems

I think it was the original TruePower line that has shown the bad caps most related to the TP 430
