Hey. I recently installed my new power supply, the 350Watt Antec Smart Blue. For some reason, it tends to shut off while the lights in the front of the case remain on. After it shuts off, it takes a very long wait before it will turn on again. I don't know if it's the power supply or not but it has been happening too frequently as of late. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

Well the PS is brand new and supposedly if it shuts off, it's a safety feature. I also know that it adjusts the fan speed as necessary. I noticed that everytime that it shuts off, it is pretty hot when I touch it. I'm guessing that maybe the fans aren't adjusting properly and the temperature gets up so high that it shuts off. That might also explain why only the PS shuts off while the main lights stay on in the front.

Try it with the side off your case for better cooling. If it doesn't do it with the side off, then you need to improve the airflow through your case as its holding heat in. Just a thought...........

Yeah I have my case open now. I'm wondering...does anybody know exactly how the whole fan speed regulation thing works on the PS? Is it possible that the mobo isn't allowing it to regulate its own fan speed? I have heard very good things about Antec and it's a brand new PS so I doubt that the actual unit is the problem. Like I said, the side of the case is off and my room is freezing cold.

Get a termperature reading utility such as MB Monitor to see about overheating. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure that SmartBlue is supposed to include an after-shutoff cool-down. When the system is running moderately hot, it works like late model electric radiator fans on cars, and keeps blowing to cool the system down after you tell Windows to shut down. If your system is running hot, either the PSU or the MB itself would probably delay a restart until it does cool down adequately.

Different cases, fan arrangements, and systems react differently to leaving the side off. A very hot-running setup very likely gets hotter when the air flow isn't properly channeled from front to back by the side door; on the other hand, cool-running systems very likely run even cooler with the sides off. Just a generality.
