Antawn Jamison to the Wizards for Stackhouse, Laettner, and the 5th pick in the draft.

ESPN link.
The Dallas Mavericks, while still hoping to convince the Los Angeles Lakers to send them Shaquille O'Neal, have completed a trade on the eve of the NBA draft that could have additional significance, ESPN.com has learned.

The Mavericks, according to league sources, have acquired the No. 5 overall pick in Thursday's draft from Washington as part of a package that features Antawn Jamison, the newly minted Sixth Man of the Year, as the prize catch for the Wizards.

ESPN's David Aldridge reports that the Wizards also will send Christian Laettner and Jerry Stackhouse to the Mavericks in the deal.

Sources say the Mavericks hope to use the No. 5 pick to sweeten the package they can offer the Lakers in exchange for the disgruntled O'Neal. It is also possible, sources say, that the Mavericks will pursue additional trades that include Laettner and/or Stackhouse.

It is not known when the trade will be announced.
VERY interesting. I wonder if the Lakers will ease up with the possibility of getting Nash, Stackhouse, and a 5th round pick? Next year isn't looking to bad all for the Lakers (given my hypotethical trade went through), with Payton announcing he is staying, and Kobe possibly staying. All they need now is a good coach.

Why would the Lakers want Nash and Stackhouse when they have Payton and Kobe at their positions?
Hell, I don't know, I'm just throwing out big names. That's why they don't pay me to make these trades.

Now Nash, Nowitski, and the 5th pick is starting to look a little better...

That is completely NOT worth an aging big man who can't make half of his free throws who can opt out of his 27.7 million dollar contract next year. The Mavs would be stupid to trade Nowitski IMO, and I hope Cuban stands his ground when he said Nowitski is as close to an untouchable as they get.

Yeah but with Shaq, they have a real chance to win a championship.
With the palyers they have now, they will never get close to a championship. They have 0 defense.
Getting Shaq would be a short term goal of trying to win the title within 2-3 yrs.

Today he basically flat out said Nowitski would NOT be a part of any trade. He also hinted at Nash not being part of any deal either, as there would be complications with a sign and trade.

shot blocking, maybe. shaq's pick and roll defense anyone?

Mavs are a sweet run and gun team, but i dont' think they have that clutch shooter during a close 115-114 games to win it. they should be looking for someone like kobe rather than trying to improve their defense. going from zero to lil bit won't help all that much imo.

Defense wins championships. I'm a huge Dallas fan but let's face it - this team cannot and will not win the championship being straight up offense oriented and trying to basically outscore the other team every game.

Nowitzki is alright, but the dude can't defend at all.

I would LOVE Nash paired up w/ Kobe though. Nash is a killer spot up shooter and is a great passer. Payton would be adequate coming off the bench, though I would much rather have Fisher.I sure hope to god Lakers don't pick up Walker, and while I like Stackhouse, he just doesn't fit anywhere. But that doesn't work, and even if it did the Lakers would need some bigs, or else they turn into the Mavs themselves.

Amare or Kenyon Martin would do.
