Currently I run ANSYS mechanical on a dell precision 7500 with 24 GB of ram running Win7 64. Due to the size of most my analysis' I cannot run in core and instead rely on writing and reading large chunks of data to the HD. I have one WD Caviar black 640 GB drive that I use as my working directory but I want to switch to raid 0. Backing up is done to our internal network so data loss is not an issue.
-I want to use 2x Seagate Savvio 15k.3 146 GB drives in raid 0 or could I save money with 2X Savvio 15k.2 146 GB drives? Difference is 16 MB vs 64 MB cache.
-The computer has a dell sas 6 ir integrated raid controller which is good for 3 Gb/s but I think that a separate 6 Gb/s card would be better correct? Please recommend a card.
Does anyone have any idea how much of a hard drive performance increase I can expect from switching from 1x 7200 rpm HD to 2X 15k rpm raid 0 drives?
Ideally I would buy 48-96 GB of ram but that is $2000-4000 and it is unlikely that I can purchase it.
